3 Things New Signing Jovan Malcolm Will Bring To Stevenage

League One club Stevenage have announced the signing of Striker Jovan Malcolm from National League side Gateshead.

Stevenage fans will undoubtedly be happy that another striker has been signed for Alex Revell’s side after the sale of Louis Appere to Cambridge United and the injury of Tyreece Simpson, which will most likely rule him out for the rest of the season.

Malcolm started his career at West Brom and was able to make a handful of senior appearances before being sent out on loan firstly to Accrington Stanley of League One at the time where he struggled to impress which resulted in him moving to National League side Solihull Moors where he only made two appearances in a month-long deal.

He was then loaned to Cheltenham before being released by Championship club West Bromwich Albion at the end of the 2023-24 season.

In September 2024, he signed for National League side Gateshead and impressed scoring nine goals for the National League Side as the Tynesiders narrowly missed out on the Playoffs before now moving to the Boro.

So, what will Jovan Malcolm bring to Stevenage this season?

Jovan Malcolm Will Bring Pace and Power

Malcolm has shown in his season at Gateshead that he can certainly burn past defenders but also is not afraid to put his head where it hurts and score such as his goal in the 1-0 win against Wealdstone. Malcolm scored eight times in 37 league games for the Heed.

Youth

At just 22, the striker has a lot of years left to develop and joining a Stevenage team that has a more youthful feel in the frontline with the likes of 22-year-old Chem Campbell, 24-year-old Phoenix Patterson and Jake Young. Alex Revell will surely look for some experienced heads for his squad now, as he looks to help his side finish higher up the League One table.

Depth

Malcolm offers a different option up front with one of his rivals for that spot being Jamie Reid, who has had a brilliant start to the season so far, scoring 3 goals in the wins over Blackpool and Rotherham, whilst other options include Jake Young and Beryly Lubala.

The 22 year old will be looking to impress the Boro fans with his performances and help with Stevenage’s great start to the season as they look to continue the momentum they have created and he looks to hit the ground running for his new club.

A Bit On Both Teams’ Previous Season

Stevenage are celebrating their 50th year as a club this season. Boro finished 14th last season, winning 15 of their 46 games. They will hope to be finisher higher up the table this time.

Gateshead finished 8th in the National League, narrowly missing out on the playoffs by just three points.

Who Have Stevenage Already Signed This Season?

Boro have already signed Jasper Patenden from Wycombe. Phoenix Patterson has also joined from Fleetwood Town. Filip Marschall, Chem Campbell, Mathaeus Roberts, Saxon Earley, Bez Lubala and Jordan Houghton have also all made the Lamex Stadium their new home.

Stevenage’s Strong Start To The Season

Boro started the season strongly with a 3-2 win at the seaside as they beat Blackpool. This was followed up with a 1-0 home win this past weekend against Rotherham United. Their season continues with a tough trip to newly-promoted Championship side Charlton Athletic before they host Northampton Town at the weekend, who have picked up just one point from their opening two games.
