5 Successful Midfielder Loans In The EFL This Season

After launching parts 1 and 2 of successful loans in the EFL in the 24/25 season, by looking at individuals between the sticks and brick walls in defence. We are now going to turn our attention to five on-loan midfielders who impressed in the 2024/25 season.

George Abbott- Notts County was on loan from Tottenham Hotspur

Our first Tottenham Hotspur addition to our list of successful midfielder loans is in the form of a Spurs loanee, George Abbott, who played an important role in The Magpies’ midfield in the 24/25 season. Scoring 5 goals whilst assisting 6, Abbott’s attacking threat in the 24/25 season was clear. However, his vital defensive actions helped him impress during his loan spell, with the 19-year-old making 64 interceptions whilst also winning 201 duels during the 3408 minutes the Spurs loanee played last season. During the 24/25 season, both Abbott’s attacking and defensive contributions helped Notts County reach the semi-final of the playoffs, but they unfortunately missed out to Wimbledon.

Cameron Humphreys- Wycombe Wanderers was on loan from Ipswich

Our second midfielder, who holds a place on our list of successful midfielder loans, is Cameron Humphreys, who was ranked 3rd in Wycombe’s top scorer charts with 7 goals, as well as this he ranked joint 1st in his side’s assist charts with 6 assists so this showed that his attacking threat helped Wycombe advance up the pitch with Humphreys creating 45 chances which earnt crucial points for his side. His defensive actions also played a role in him completing a successful loan spell, with the 21-year-old winning 32 tackles in the middle of the park. In his loan spell, his attacking, passing, and defensive duties were immense, which led to Wycombe gaining a place in the playoffs, but unfortunately they failed to beat Charlton in the semi-final’s.

Jacob Wright- Norwich City was on loan from Manchester City

The third addition to our list of successful midfielder loans is in the form of Jacob Wright, who only played 15 matches this season for Norwich but managing 4 assists and creating 20 chances. This showed that his attacking threat was clear throughout his very short loan spell. As well as the Manchester City loanees’ attacking attributes, he also produced some brilliant defensive actions and passing ability, which consisted of having a successful tackle percentage of 74.1% and a successful aerial duels percentage of 54.5%. The 19-year-olds’ passing ability showed as well, with an impressive 84.9% pass accuracy. This helped Wright complete a successful loan spell at the Canaries and helped his side in the later part of the campaign.

Tyrese Fornah- Salford City was on loan from Derby County

The penultimate addition to our list of successful midfielder loans is in the form of defensive midfielder Tyrese Fornah, who played much of the season, amassing 3496 minutes for Salford in the 24/25 season. He created 38 chances, scored 1, and assisted 4. The 25-year-old’s ability to create and execute attacking opportunities within the 24/25 season was clear, whilst his ability to act defensively was also plain to see, with him winning 33 tackles and carrying out 189 successful duels. The Derby loanee helped the Ammies limit goals conceded with only 54 this season which made Fornah stand out in his loan spell and Salford they narrowly missed out on the League Two playoffs by one point.

Jamie Donley- Leyton Orient was on loan from Tottenham Hotspur

Our final addition and another Spurs addition on our list of successful midfielder loans is in the form of attacking midfielder Jamie Donley, who acted as the main number 10 in the O’s midfield. Scoring 8 goals whilst also assisting 10 showed that Donley’s attacking threat was clear during the 24/25 season. His defensive actions also contributed to him holding a space on our list, with the 20-year-old winning 143 duels whilst also winning 68.6% of his tackles in the 2762 minutes the Spurs loanee played in the 24/25 season. All of these actions contributed to him impressing during his loan spell and helped Leyton Orient reach the final of the League One playoffs.
