Since his return from a groin injury, Norwich City striker Josh Sargent has been proving his worth to the Canaries fans most recently bagging himself a brace against Stoke.
The USA international has scored seven goals in nine games since making his return against Brighton in the FA Cup helping Norwich as they push for the playoffs
The only worry for fans of Norwich is whether he will remain at the club past the summer with many clubs bound to be interested.
Sargent’s Career So Far
Sargent began his career on a programme at IMG Academy in Florida. Whilst in America he played club football for St. Louis Scott Gallagher.
At this time, he impressed so much that he ended up representing the United States at the U17s World Cup and the U20s World Cup.
He gained attention from European sides during this time, but he couldn’t move to a team in Europe until he turned 18 years old due to transfer regulations.
He wasted no time in moving to a European side when he was able to, signing a contract with Bundesliga side Werder Bremen on his Birthday in 2018.
He began with Werder Bremen II in the fourth tier of German Football scoring seven goals in 12 appearances.
It didn’t take him long to break into the clubs first team where he scored two minutes into his debut against Dusseldorf in the December of 2018.
During his tenure with Werder Bremen, Sargent registered 15 goals and assisted nine more.
He then made the switch to Norwich who at the time were in the Premier League for a fee of £8 million and has remained there since.
How has Sargent’s time at Norwich Been?
Sargent joined Norwich in the Summer of 2021, the beginning of Norwich’s most recent Premier League Season.
His numbers in his first season did not live up to the expectations of a prospect like him in the opinion of many canaries fans.
He scored 4 goals throughout the 21/22 season with 2 of these being in the Premier League and both in the same match which saw them best Watford with a 3-0 scoreline. His other two goals came in the EFL Cup once again in the form of a brace this time in a 6-0 victory against Bournemouth.
Following relegation to the Championship, Sargent remained with Norwich in their bid to regain promotion to the Premier League.
The 22/23 Season saw a much more consistent side of Sargent who netted 13 goals and assisted two more.
This season also saw Sargent tested in a variety of positions, primarily across the frontline but on two occasions as a central midfielder.
The American who despite missing a large chunk of the 23/24 season due to surgery on his ankle, scored 16 goals in just 26 games.
He was played as an out-and-out centre-forward for the entirety of this season, possibly contributing to the increase in goals.
Injury problems have been a recurring theme for Sargent, missing thirteen games due to a groin injury. In the twenty games he has played, he has put eleven goals in the back of the net.
Sargent looks in the form of his life as of the present, the only downside for Norwich is that this may spark the interest of other teams, particularly that of a higher status.
Would Sargent Leave Norwich?
Josh Sargent is contracted to the Canaries until the end of the 27/28 season but that is not to say the American would stay put if a desired transfer opportunity arose.
Norwich are certainly getting value for money with their man at the minute with the American currently earning £25k p/w.
There are likely potential suitors for Sargent that could and would pay higher wages for someone of his ability, making this a factor in the situation.
An example of a club that could come in for Sargent is promotion hopefuls, Leeds United.
The club are in a strong financial place and would likely look to add to their already strong attack should they gain promotion to the Premier League.
With the American unable to stop scoring at the moment, the Norwich fans will hope he will maintain this form for as long as possible whilst also remaining at the club for the years to come.
The future of Josh Sargent is a topic that will largely be untouched until the summer of this year but, the way he is playing is bound to attract many clubs to look at a potential deal.
