Mansfield’s Lucas Akins, aged 36, admitted causing the death of cyclist Adrian Daniel by careless or inconsiderate driving. The crash occurred on 17th March 2022, with Mr Daniel, aged 33, dying 10 days later from his injuries.
Akins will be sentenced in Leeds Crown Court on 24th April.
Mansfield Town did not wish to comment when the BBC approached them on Tuesday, after the news broke.
Nigel Clough then controversially started the forward in their 0-0 draw with Wigan Athletic, the very same day.
When speaking to BBC Radio Nottingham post-match Clough stated: “We can’t comment on it I’m afraid. We’ve known about it for some time. It’s not just happened but we’re not able to comment.”
The striker, who won promotion with the stags last season has two goals and two assists in league one this season. It seems his future is very much up in the air.
Fans of the stags and other clubs alike did not hold back when replying to the line up announcement post from Mansfield Town’s official ‘X’ account.
One stated ‘I don’t think this is a good move’ whilst another explained ‘I’m shocked to see Akins playing after today’s news. Still nothing from the club. They have covered this up, as the crash happened a few weeks later he signed for us’.
Was Nigel Clough right to start the forward?
