The EFL never fails to bring you the best and worse moments in English football. With 72 teams going at it every weekend it can be incredibly hard to keep up with.
From the good, to the bad, to the downright funny, here’s five things you may have missed from the EFL this weekend.
It’s a big one this week.
Bradford City vs Swindon Town Madness
In the game of the weekend Bradford City travelled down to Swindon Town look to create a gap at top spot. Unfortunately for them, things didn’t go to plan.
It was all sunshine and roses at first as Calum Kavanagh bagged two in 10 minutes to put the Bantams well in the lead. Then begun the madness. Captain Richie Smallwood made a questionable tackle, and the Referee made a questionable chose, the red came out and Smallwood was off.
Less than two minutes later, Bradford scored their first own goal as Nathan Byrne bundled into his own net to get Swindon back in the tie.
The first half wasn’t done yet, Kavanagh would get his hattrick before Kabongo Tshimanga netted to make it 3-2 at the break.
Into the second and Swindon got it all square on 62, with forward Harry Smith scoring. 17 minutes later, Bradley Halliday, who got assists in the first half, scored the Bantams fourth.
Time to breath? Nah, in the 90th minute Smith scored again to surely give his side a point.
In the dying moments of the game Bradford City defender Jack Shepherd had probably the worst moment of his life as he put the ball in his own net to gift Swindon the win. The Town players couldn’t resist thanking him either.
Tranmere’s Stunning Comeback
Staying in the world’s wildest division that is League Two, it was Tranmere Rovers turn to grab the headlines.
In what could be categorised as a relegation six pointer, the Rovers headed to Accrington Stanley, and it all went wrong.
The Birkenhead side found themselves 3-0 down at half-time staring into a new set of woes.
Luckily for Rovers, the game wasn’t over, and they decided to unleash three absolute rockets.
On 78 minutes, Omari Patrick put a free kick into the top corner, 10 minutes late Kristian Dennis let a shot rip from outside the box to bring Tranmere within one.
It was Patrick again, with the last kick of the game, cut in from the left and found that top corner again, giving us some of the best limbs the game has ever seen and completing that comeback.
Chris Wilder’s Headloss
The Championship promotion race is going down the wire and some are feeling the pressure more than most.
Before kick off on Saturday, Sheffield United sat three points behind the top two of Leeds United and Burnley. The Blades had lost their last two games and travelled down to rock bottom Plymouth Argyle.
Easy work for the former Premier League side right? Not in the Championship.
Jesurun Rak-Sakyi gave the Blades the lead, before Ryan Hardie and Muhamed Tijani combined late on for Argyle to get a win they so desperately need.
For some, Plymouths celebrations in victory were too much to handle. Mainly for one individual, United boss Chris Wilder.
After making his feelings known on the pitch, he continued to argue with officials and Argyle players in the tunnel as tempers flared.
Not a good luck for a promotion run.
Peterborough United’s Vertu Victory
Normally a cup final wouldn’t make a list like this, but Peterborough United’s 2-0 Vertu Trophy win over Birmingham City was just full of moments.
Billed as a David vs Goliath with Birmingham’s monumental spending and United’s poor season, the odds were very much so in City’s favour.
Unfortunately for them, that’s not how this played out.
Peterborough took the lead through a perfect free kick from full back Harley Mills.
United made sure of a quick double with captain Hector Kyprianou adding another to the top bins section.
From here Birmingham never recovered, barely creating solid chances and letting the frustrations get to them as the game went on, even after the final whistle.
Upon collecting their runners up medal, Birmingham players found themselves in the middle of a bizarre moment as owners, NFL superstar Tom Brady and Chairman Tom Wagner lectured the players in a way reminiscent of Phil Brown’s mid pitch team talk at Hull City when his side lost 5-1 to Manchester City.
As for Peterborough United, they become the first team to win back-to-back Vertu Trophies and get a glowing moment to what’s been a tough campaign.
Another Grimbsy Town Wonder Goal
The Mariners are at it again. Last week we had Luca Barrington hitting top bins, this week it was the turn of Kieran Green.
Playing Harrogate Town, Grimsby cleared a corner. Still in his own half, Green saw the keeper off his line, and you know the rest.
The game would end 2-2 but nobody’s going to forget Green’s David Beckham esque finish.
There’s no way we will have included every obscure moment from this weekend’s EFL action, certainly not with just five picks. Let us know what we missed in the comments below.
