Leeds United Interested in 29-year-old German Midfielder

Leeds United are reportedly interested in 29-year-old midfielder Julian Weigl.

The German midfielder plays at Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach and is said to be interested in a move to the Premier League, the hopeful destination of Leeds United.

Weigl played under United boss Daniel Farke in 2022 and is believed to still have a good relationship with the manager and is keen to play under him again should Leeds complete a return to the topflight.

The player often plays deeper in the midfield and could be the perfect candidate to partner Ao Tanaka in Leeds’s central partnership. Weigl has spent time at Borussia Dortmund and Benfica, playing almost all his career at the top level and comes with significant Champions League experience.

This season, Weigl has been a huge part of Monchengladbach’s charge for European football, being an integral member of the starting XI. The 29-year-old has played in all but one of the club’s Bundesliga games, getting two assists but primarily controlling the ball from deep.

Leeds United are currently top of the Championship, level on points with second placed Burnley and five points above third places Sheffield United. With four games left, Leeds will be desperate to avoid dropping into the play-offs, as they did last year, and get back to the Premier League.

The West Yorkshire club arguably have the easiest run in, facing just two clubs with things to play for in Bristol City and Plymouth Argyle.

Should Leeds return to the promise land, Weigl could be a key player in the hope of staying up.

It is believed that Weigl is only happy to move to England’s top tier and is a top earner at Monchengladbach. Despite this, his ties to Farke would make him obtainable and his quality could make him an important addition.
