Former Wolves Coach in for Newport County Job

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Coventry City coach Rhys Carr is being tipped to take over at Newport County.

Carr has been in coaching circles for over eight years and is highly regarded by his peers. Whilst Newport County appears his destination, reports suggest he has also had conversations with fellow League Two sides Tranmere Rovers and Accrington Stanley.

Carr, born in Cardiff, had a playing career in the Cymru Premier, playing for five different sides, often turning out as a right back or right sided midfielder.

After coaching at Swansea City and Cardiff City, Carr moved on Bristol City, then onto Sheffield United as they were promoted to the Premier League. The coach would leave in 2021 to return to Wales in order to be closer to his family.

At the beginning of 2022, Carr returned to football, firstly at Bristol Rovers as head coach of the U21’s and U18’s. It wasn’t long before the Premier League came calling again, as he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers to help out fringe players.

After a stint as assistant manager for the Irish Women’s National Team, Carr joined Mark Robins set up at Coventry City in 2024. As Robins was sacked, Carr was placed in interim charge, securing two draws in three games before Frank Lampard was appointed.

As Lampard brought in his own staff, Carr left the club, but it was clear the former Welsh player would have a number ofsuitors as he enters full-time management.

Newport have been without a manager since Nelson Jardim left the club before the last game of the season. A nine-game winless run saw County finish just seven points above the relegation zone.

Whilst a final decision on the Welsh club’s future is yet to be made, it appears with Carr’s high regard and logistical location to the club, he could be the next man in charge.
