Port Vale Join Huddersfield In Race For Cameron Antwi

The Lower Tiers understands that League One newcomers, Port Vale have joined Huddersfield Town in the race for Newport midfielder Cameron Antwi.

With his contract expiring in 2026, it would take a fee to see him leave the Welsh club.

Although the 23-year-old’s primary position is centre midfield, he can also play central defensive midfield when necessary.

Antwi went to Blackpool in 2019 after playing youth football at Fulham, and in 2020 he turned pro.

He had failed loan stints at AFC Telford and Southport before being cut loose by Blackpool in 2022.

Cardiff City chose to sign him on a two-year contract that same summer after spotting his potential.

Despite a significant knee injury that limited Antwi’s time at Cardiff City, the Bluebirds extended their offer to him at the end of the 2023–2024 campaign.

Since playing for Cardiff’s first team was doubtful, Cameron Antwi decided to sign a permanent contract with Newport County so he could play and demonstrate his abilities.

Following Bryn Morris’s departure and the injuries to Aaron Wildig, Kieron Evans, and Kai Whitmore, Antwi began to make frequent appearances in the starting eleven.

After upsetting Nelson Jardim, the then-Newport County manager, the former Fulham junior player had to take advantage of this chance.

In an interview, Jardim said: “Antwi’s skill was always undeniable, but it is known that he lacked the drive to put forth effort during practices and games.

“Antwi is a good example. He is aware that I wasn’t always pleased with his training and performances.

“However, I will state in public: fair play. Cameron has demonstrated exceptional intelligence and has transformed his daily behaviour.

“He always arrives on time and is prepared to train to the best of his abilities. You observe a player who is getting better, and that is due to both his shift in mindset and the efforts that we all put forward at the club”.
