Middlesbrough choose Edwards as next Manager

Former Luton Town boss Rob Edwards has been selected by Middlesbrough and is set to be announced in the coming weeks with talks at an advanced stage.

Middlesbrough have chosen their next manager following the sacking of Michael Carrick earlier this month.

The Riverside based club made the decision to move on from Carrick after failing to make the playoffs for a second consecutive season despite an increased transfer budget.

Failing to have a plan B, alongside a lack of goals following the departure of Emanuel Latte Lath despite significant reinforcement’s are seen as two of the big factors in choosing to move on from the former Manchester United midfielder.

Edwards would join the Boro on the back of a world wind time with Luton.

The now 42-year-old joined the Hatters after a poor spell at Watford, being appointed in November of 2022.

From here, Edwards would lead Luton to the Premier League, beating Coventry City on penalties in the play-off final. In the following season, the Hatters would give staying up a valiant attempt but ultimately fall short as the campaign progressed.

As with any relegation, a team needs to change its mindset and reset in order to avoid a freefall. Unfortunately for Luton, Edward’s was not able to do so and left Luton in January 2025, with the club sat in 20th place, just two points above the relegation zone.

Whilst Edward’s does have two poor seasons under his belt, he also heads to the Riverside with two promotions. One with Luton and one from his first full-time job at Forest Green Rovers, where he led to team to promotion to League One, whilst also winning League Two manager of the season in the process.

Middlesbrough will be hoping the former Wolverhampton Wanderers player can replicate his fairytale run with Luton and turn things around at the Riverside. Competing for promotion is now an expectation at the club, it’s the play-offs at the minimum for this club heading into 2025-26.
