A battle is brewing in the Championship as West Bromwich Albion, Millwall, and
Middlesbrough circle Huddersfield Town’s highly-rated young defender Brodie Spencer, The
Lower Tiers has been told. The 21-year-old Northern Ireland international is firmly on the
radar of all three clubs after a consistent 2024/25 campaign that highlighted his versatility,
composure, and potential.
Spencer, who already has 24 Championship appearances to his name, finished the
campaign predominantly as a centre-back. His assured displays in the heart of defence
clearly haven’t gone unnoticed and his ability to also operate effectively as a full-back or
wing-back on either flank, (though he naturally favours the right-hand side) makes him an
attractive proposition for Championship clubs and managers seeking defensive depth
without compromising on quality.
A product of Huddersfield’s academy, Spencer’s development has been impressive and the
past two seasons have highlighted that. He spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Scottish
Premiership side Motherwell, where he made a notable impact during the first half of the
campaign. Originally intended as a season-long loan, Spencer was recalled by Huddersfield
in January after excelling in Scotland, signalling the club’s growing reliance on his services.
Last season, the young defender gained valuable experience in League One, racking up 33
appearances, three goals, and two assists — a good return for a defender. His maturity on
the ball, tactical awareness, and work ethic have all contributed to a growing reputation that
now extends well beyond West Yorkshire.
Internationally, Spencer already has 17 caps for Northern Ireland, a remarkable tally for a
player still so early in his career. His inclusion in the national team setup has helped
accelerate his development, exposing him to high-pressure situations, a higher quality of
opponents and further underlining his readiness for the next step.
With just one year remaining on his contract, Huddersfield face a pivotal decision this
summer. While the club would prefer to retain Spencer’s services, the interest from
Championship clubs could force their hand. West Brom, Millwall, and Middlesbrough are all
admirers and could be ready to make a move for the defender soon.
Though his current market valuation remains unclear, any potential suitor would have to pay
a fee given his age, experience, and international pedigree. However, with his contract set to
expire next summer, Huddersfield may be inclined to cash in now rather than risk losing him
for free next summer.
You can see how each of the interested clubs would benefit from Spencer’s arrival. West
Brom are need to bolster their defensive ranks with young, high-ceiling talent. Millwall,
known for their combative style, could see Spencer as a perfect fit for their high-energy
system. Meanwhile, Middlesbrough — with their focus on youth and technical development
— could view him as a long-term project with first-team readiness.
Brodie Spencer is a player on the rise, and this summer may mark the beginning of a
significant new chapter in his career.
