Birmingham City are reportedly planning to win the race for Wolves defender Tommy Doyle through the offering of a loan-to-buy deal, as The Blues look to finalise the final steps of the move, reports Alan Nixon.
Birmingham aren’t the only ones who look to capture Doyle, as Sheffield United are believed to be in the race for their former star too, however the Blues may be willing to further than the Blades financially in order to get the deal signed and sealed.
As reported on earlier in the week by The Lower Tiers, it seemed certain that Doyle would be moving to Birmingham after Chris Davies’ side looked to have beaten off interest from Premier League Sunderland and fellow Championship Rivals Wrexham, but a late surge from Sheffield United has prolonged The Blues from completing the deal.
Financial Bravery May Well Win Race For Birmingham
Both sides are looking at loans to bolster their squads this season, with financial restrictions meaning big-money moves are difficult to complete in this window. However, it seems that The Blues have a stronger backing and their ruthlessness in this deal could be what sees Tommy Doyle at St Andrews instead of somewhere else this summer.
Even though interest from higher up would surely be a better option it now seems that the 23-year-old will be joining Birmingham this summer.
This is despite the interest from elsewhere, as a strong buy clause of £10 million may fend off any remaining interest from Bramall Lane, with Birmingham committed to getting the absolute most out this transfer window to give the Championship a real surprise come opening day in August.
Not Just Tommy Doyle…
Alongside the Doyle deal, Birmingham seem to have interest in completing other big moves, with links to signing former Celtic Star Kyogo Furuhashi emerging earlier on in the week. It seems as if the American-Based Ownership at St Andrews are giving Chris Davies a strong financial backing this summer.
Tommy Doyle is a statement signing, and if they could further add to their side who’s to say where Birmingham may end up next season.
