Fleetwood Town Defender Brendan Wiredu is racking up interest from higher up the EFL, as Plymouth join Rotherham in the race to complete a deal for the 25-year-old, through the reports of Alan Nixon.
Wiredu enjoyed a season full of success last campaign with Fleetwood, and his statistical readings through FotMob make his attributes look very strong for the likes of Argyle and Rotherham to be chasing.
With high chance creation rates and strong set-piece threats, the English Defender is deservedly grabbing attention. But where would be a more likely destination Wiredu to go if he does end up leaving Fleetwood this window?
Why Would A Rotherham United Move Suit Brendan Wiredu?
A move to the New York Stadium this summer certainly doesn’t seem beyond the realms of possibility, with the large part of Rotherham’s defensive options being an older group, some slightly younger legs could benefit The Millers in their bid to improve on a shocking campaign last year.
Rotherham know they have to tighten up their defensive line with key additions this summer, after a poor defensive record last season. Wiredu could be a fantastic addition for The Millers, as not only his tackles won percentages but also the presence the 25-year-old defender brings in the air is a fundamental piece of defensive kit to have within your side.
However, would it be a move that Wiredu himself wants to complete? The possibility is there for him to join Matt Hamshaw’s side, but the prospect of Plymouth could draw him away from The Millers, as Rotherham’s set-up and potential plans fall short of what could be on offer down in Devon.
Why Plymouth Will Likely Win The Race Over The Millers
Plymouth seem more likely to secure Wiredu’s services for next season if Fleetwood allow their star defender to depart, as the recent appointment of Tom Cleverly may provide the Fleetwood defender a positive future alongside big minutes as PAFC strive for promotion next season.
The passing attributes that Wiredu possesses makes him a big target for Plymouth, who will most likely set themselves up to play a large amount of their football with possession next season, and it certainly seems that a style of football in that fashion is when we get the best out of the 25-year-old.
If Plymouth were to do well next season and earn promotion, it could then give Wiredu further chance to prove himself on a bigger stage and continue to develop into a beastly defender. Argyle certainly seem to be the stronger side in this transfer battle, but what do you think?
Should Wiredu take his chance and move, or would a further spell with Fleetwood be further beneficial? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
