EXCLUSIVE: Lewis Richards Still Expected to Stay at Bradford City

Lewis Richards Expected to Commit Future to Bradford City Despite Contract Expiration
Despite the fact that Lewis Richards’ contract expired today (July 1st), Bradford City are
confident that the left-back will sign a new deal at Valley Parade, The Lower Tiers
understands.

The 23-year-old spent the previous two seasons with the Bantams, where he established
himself in Graham Alexander’s system before suffering a season-ending injury in February.
Negotiations have been ongoing for a few weeks, and while no definite agreement has been
made, discussions are said to have advanced. The Lower Tiers previously claimed that both
parties hoped to complete a deal by the end of June, and while that date has gone, the club
remains confident of getting it over the line.

In the photos released from Bradford City’s return to pre-season training last week, Lewis
Richards was there and being put through his paces. This suggests that the contract talks
are going well and the relationship between the club and player is still a positive one.
Richards emerged as one of City’s most improved players last season, firmly establishing
himself as a left-wing-back. He made 17 starts, scoring twice and assisting once,
demonstrating both defensive and attacking prowess before a reoccurring injury forced him
to undergo surgery.

His absence allowed Crystal Palace loanee Tayo Adaramola to step in and wow fans with his
speed and forward desire. Nonetheless, Richards’ consistency and commitment have been
recognised both within and outside of the club. A number of EFL clubs have expressed
interest in the former Wolves academy product, but Bradford have been proactive in
reinforcing their faith in him during his rehabilitation.

The club maintained loyalty during his recovery from injury and his performances last season
created a great connection to the fans. There’s also a lingering sense of unfinished
business—despite missing the last stages of last season, Richards will be eager to play a
key role in the club’s return to League One in 2025/26.

While manager Graham Alexander recently stated that “the ball is in Lewis’s court,” the tone
surrounding the transaction has evolved positively in recent days.
When the new deal is
finalised, it will be a big boost to City’s summer ambitions for left wing-back. He’ll face off
against the incoming Ibou Touray from Stockport County and Tyreik Wright, who adds depth
to the left flank.

Though not officially confirmed, Richards signing a new contract appears increasingly likely.
