Who Is Cardiff City’s Newest Trialist?

Welsh youth international Rhys Morrish is currently on trial with League One side Cardiff City, following his exit from Championship club West Bromwich Albion earlier this summer.

The youngster was one of fourteen out-of-contract players released by West Brom at the end of June, signalling the club’s decision to allow him to explore opportunities elsewhere.

The 17-year-old centre-back featured for the Bluebirds’ under-21 team in their recent 3–2 pre-season victory away at Yeovil Town on Tuesday night.

Morrish played the full 90 minutes as he aims to secure his next move after leaving West Brom at the end of the 2023/24 season.

Having already gained valuable experience at youth level, Morrish now appears ready to make the step into senior football—most likely with a club lower down the football pyramid or one with a strong focus on developing talent from within its academy.

His potential move to South Wales could be influenced by the arrival of new Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy, known for his track record in nurturing young talent and promoting academy players into senior football.

Who is Rhys Morrish?

Morrish began his career at Hereford United, then playing in the National League North, before earning a move to West Brom in 2023.

During the 2023/24 U18 Premier League season, he made 19 appearances, racking up 1,598 minutes on the pitch and scoring once. His consistent performances established him as a regular fixture in the Baggies’ academy setup.

Described by U18s coach Leigh Downing as an old-fashioned centre-half, Morrish is praised for his physicalitydetermination, and emerging technical ability, making him a well-rounded defensive prospect.

On the international stage, he has represented Wales at both under-17 and under-18 levels, further underlining his status as one of the country’s brightest young defenders and a clear talent who has immense potential in football.
