Danny Ings – The Missing Middlesborough Piece?

Rob Edwards’ Middlesborough side are on the verge of signing ex Liverpool, Burnley and Southampton striker Danny Ings.

The forward looks set to return to the Championship for the first time after his standout 2013/2014 season where he netted 21 goals in 40 games as Burnley clinched promotion.

Why Danny Ings?

If we compare the 2023/24 and 2024-25 EFL Championship seasons, we can see that the Smoggies scored less goals and dropped two positions in the league standing. Now, aiming to push for a top six finish , the signing of a clinical and experienced striker in Ings would be a marquee capture to support in the push up the table.

This wouldn’t be the first time Danny Ings and Rob Edwards have met after a brief meeting in 2011 in a Burnley vs Barnsley clash. Additionally, Edwards who has signed a contract until 2028 has yet to open his summer window account which would make Ings his first signing.

Ings, with 72 Premiership goals and 27 Championship goals to his name, brings a wealth of experience to Middlesborough playing 419 games overall in his career with well over half of them coming in the Premier League.

Although, eyebrows may be raised as to how fit the forward is having not been a regular starter for the past two seasons. Despite this, Boro are arguably still desperate for another striker as Tommy Conway is the only recognised striker at the club currently.

What Could Ings Bring To The Riverside?

Ings a proven goal scorer can bring goals, assists and mobility also offering his leadership qualities in a push for playoffs-making him a dual threat.

The ex-Liverpool striker will also be hungry to prove himself after being released by West Ham the forward initially aimed to stay in the Premier League but after interest went dry, he had to shift his expectations. His shift towards Middlesborough shows a newfound hunger to keep playing football.

The Bottom Line.

Middlesborough making a move makes sense, a Premier League proven striker and a Championship winner brings some real potential to their side. If completed, it shows real intent by Boro to push on and fight for a return to the Premier League.
