The Story Behind The New Newport County Away Kit

The design created by kit manufacturers VX3 Apparel aims to showcase the to remember the story of the Basque children of 1937 and the incredible story of the power of humanity in the darkest of times.

Who Are the Basque Children of 1937?

In May 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, nearly 4,000 Basque children were evacuated from northern Spain to Britain to escape the bombing and violence inflicted by the fascist forces of General Francisco Franco, backed by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.

56 of those children found safety in Newport, forever forging a link between the two areas and inspiring the creation of the away kit for the upcoming campaign.

โ€œThe child evacuees became known asย Los Niรฑos Vascos (the Basque children). One of them was my father,โ€ said Stephen Benevente in the clubโ€™s launch video.

โ€œI carry both places in me, the rhythm of the Basque mountain, the echoes of South Wales. This story isnโ€™t just his or mine, but of between two lands.

โ€œHe found refuge in Caerleon, Newport, a strange new land far from home. He arrived a boy with no family, he lived a completely different life to anything heโ€™d known before.

โ€œTwo cities tied together by the courage of strangers, a kindness that crossed an ocean, a second hone, a second chance.โ€

The instantly iconic jersey features the colours of Athletic Bilbao and serves as a tribute to the 56 Basque children given a second chance, with each of their names woven into the fabric of the shirt.
