Wrexham To Complete Signing Of Former Wigan Forward

Josh Windass joins Wrexham, boosting their Championship ambitions significantly.

Josh Windass has reportedly completed his medical and will sign for Welsh side Wrexham in the coming days. The dynamic forward left Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last season following the termination of his contract by mutual consent.

The Move And Background

Windass who departed Hillsborough amid severe financial issues – including unpaid wages- netted 13 championship goals during the 2024/2025 campaign, but has also struck a total of 53 club goals for The Owls, making him the clubs leading goal scorer this century.

Wrexham reportedly held off later offers from Coventry, Norwich and even Derby County. Despite attractive offers coming from elsewhere the Englishman chose the Racecourse as his next destination, after agreeing terms and completing his medical earlier this week. The deal is reported to last three years.

Once announced, the talisman would be the Red Dragons fifth summer signing joining other new names such as Liberato Cacace, George Thomason and Danny Ward.

Why Josh Windass Makes Sense

Windass is a proven Championship performer tallying an impressive 170 appearances and 40+ goals in the second tier, including multiple seasons with Rangers, Wigan and Wednesday. He also brings crucial top level experience to a newly promoted Wrexham side.

Joining on a free, Windass falls nothing short of outstanding value. He represents a highly cost-effective acquisition. Analysts predict he could be one of the best free-agent signings throughout the entire league if he replicates previous seasons form.

Dressing Room Dynamics

In a podcast in February 2024, Windass previously ridiculed Wrexham striker Ollie Palmer, stating Palmer’s self-belief in scoring 20 goals a season “absolutely delusional” also claiming he was a superior player.

This may backfire at Windass as Palmer remains a key figure in the Wrexham side, having netted on 16 occasions in a promotion winning season.

How Will Josh Windass Be Used?

Phil Parkinson may choose to deploy Windass as shadow striker in a 3-back shape, supporting a central forward man such as Ryan Hardie. Parkinson will look to exploit Windass’ pace and late runs in the box while also allowing him to drift between midfield and attack, helping create overloads and high presses.

Windass thrives through receiving freedom to roam and exploiting gaps. This is arguably Windass’ natural position as shown at Wednesday where he frequently supported Michael Smith.

Final Thoughts

Josh Windass brings Championship pedigree, leadership and a threat to goal. If he lives up to expectations, he will be a marquee capture for a Wrexham side who are keen to establish themself in the second tier.

His arrival marks intent from the owners and Parkinson. This summer’s rebuild sees Wrexham blend experience and ambition, with Windass poised at the heart of their next chapter.
