Wrexham have made an ambitious move for former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen according to Mail Sport.
Eriksen, 35, left Old Trafford at the end of the 2024-25 Premier League campaign. In his three years at the club, the midfielder made 107 appearances and was able to score eight goals.
Now, with the Red Dragons making a move, Eriksen could play in the EFL Championship for the first time in his career after spells with Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan alongside United previously.
Why Should Wrexham Sign Christian Eriksen?
The midfielder would bring several qualities to the Welsh side if he were to join the club this summer. The first of these is his experience. With over 400 games played in England and with other spells abroad, the Danish man has a high level of experience which may be valuable to Wrexham as they look to perform well in the English second tier following promotion last season.
This experience could also be used to mentor some of Wrexham’s younger midfielders such as Josh Adam and Harry Ashfield. This may help those players to become even better than they currently are.
Christian Eriksen would also bring the ability to create opportunities. Through using the 33-year-old’s FotMob statistics, we can see that was able to create 31 chances in the 1059 minutes he played last season. This shows that when he has the ball, Eriksen can make things happen and can be a threat.
As well as this, the midfielder was able to contribute two assists to Manchester United’s 2024-25 Premier League campaign. This once again shows that Christian Eriksen is able to create chances with the ball and is able to positively impact a side.
These reasons show us why the midfielder is being targeted and show us why he would be a good fit for a side.
Potential Downsides
Whilst his experience and his threat are positives, there is also some potential downsides that could come with the signing.
One of these downsides is his age. At 35, Eriksen isn’t getting younger and only featured in 11 games during last season’s Premier League season. His age could mean that he isn’t able to feature in every game which may limit his ability to positively impact Wrexham’s gameplay.
Furthermore, his defensive statistics show that defending is one of the midfielder’s weakest areas. Last campaign, Christian Eriksen only won 47.4% of his tackles, 38.1% of his duels and 25% of his aerial duels. This is something that could negatively impact Wrexham whilst he is playing.
Wrexham’s Midfield Depth
If the 35-year-old was to sign for the Red Dragons, he would be joining a high quality and large squad. Currently, according to FotMob, Wrexham currently have 14 midfielders in their squad which is a very high number when compared to other squads.
With Phil Parkinson’s 3-5-1-1 formation, which was seen against Lincoln City in Wrexham’s final game of last season, a minimum of four midfielders are used. However, this does mean a number of potential options miss out.
If Christian Eriksen were to join, it would mean that the midfield depth of the squad would increase which would mean more players would miss out. But, with someone of the Danish man’s abilities, their squad would hold a much higher level of quality.
Can Eriksen Be A Good Signing For Wrexham?
The signing of the midfielder would arguably be a coup and a massive sign of intent for Wrexham. But, with his age, would he be able to make a formidable impact for the Red Dragons in the EFL Championship?
