Rubin Colwill on Freeing Feeling of Responsibility, ‘Special’ Cardiff City Connection

Cardiff City midfielder Rubin Colwill stated that he felt a sense of freedom having accepted responsibility to be a leader for the Bluebirds in their League One campaign.

The 23-year-old was announced as the clubs vice-captain this week but lead the team in their 2-1 opening day win against Peterborough United with club captain Callum Chambers suspended.

Manager Brian Barry-Murphy stated that the squad participated in a vote to decide who they believed should be captain and vice-captain for the upcoming campaign.

“It’s a big responsibility, once you’ve almost accepted that responsibility its almost freeing really to have that on your shoulders and to try and help everybody get through the game.”

“Whenever there’s been the responsibility placed on my shoulders in younger age groups, I feel like I’ve always stood up to that and it was something I was looking forward to.

“It’s a difference experience for me, never been captain before, my initial reaction was just being proud that he (Barry-Murphy) believes in me that much and the other players respect me enough to be the captain I was looking forward to it really.”

Rubin Colwill scored a sublime long range free-kick early in the second half to level the score, before right-back Ronan Kpakio scored the winner for the home side.

“It was a great day, I think not just for me personally, but I think for everybody involved. I think it was a big build up to today, a lot of new things we’ve been working on.

“We put in a really good performance, showed a lot of togetherness and a lot of character to come back and I think we can kick on from here.”

Colwill Brothers Shine as Bluebirds Secure Winning Start

The academy product lined up alongside his younger brother Joel in midfield, a special occasion for the brothers who have been with the club since the age of six.

“It was really special, typical my parents were away, every time we play together, they’re away somewhere,” Colwill said with a laugh.

“We trained so much together, this has been our dream since we were six years old and to be able to do it together, I think sometimes we don’t realise how rare and how special it is to be able to play with your brother.”

“I thought he played unbelievably today as well fair play to him he was top draw.”

Rubin Colwill Focused on ‘Special’ Cardiff City Targets

Having produced another moment of magic to help his boyhood club to their first victory of the season, speculation will be made on whether Colwill could catch the eye of clubs further up the pyramid.

However, the Cardiff midfielder made it clear that his ambition is to help the club he’s been with for almost two decades bounce back from a period of difficulty.

“I think that responsibility is something that I like, I get to be part of something, to be here and be an integral part of what we are trying to achieve at my boyhood club.”

“It’s very important to me, I think we can do something really special this year, use everybody who’s here and turn it all around, I think that can be really special for all of us.”

In what is expected to be a very competitive season in the third tier, Rubin Colwill has no doubt that despite not yet having added to their squad, the quality is there to compete.

“We’ve almost trusted in what we’ve got is good enough, and it is good enough. I’m fully confident in every player in our changing room that we’re capable of winning this league and getting promoted.”
