Tuesday night’s League Two fixtures delivered underdog victories, shocks and entertainment throughout. Now, ahead of today’s games, five of our writers have predicted five of the best games across the division with the aim of getting them right.
Let’s see what they predicted below.
League Two Predictions
Leo’s Predictions
Cheltenham 0-1 Barnet
Newly promoted side Barnet have only seen three goals in their matches and picked up
three points in the games they have played so far this season. Cheltenham have struggled
throughout the start of the season with them losing every match in League Two so far.
In my opinion, I think that The Hive London outfit will edge this tie over Michael Flynn’s struggling side and build on their latest victory against Swindon Town.
Gillingham 3-2 Crewe
Gillingham have had a strong start to the season under Gareth Ainsworth, with them being
on a heavy unbeaten run in the League from last season and their most recent 4-1 victory
against Chesterfield, who are a promotion favourite.
Crewe have 12 points and they are sitting at the top of the league, but it’s only the start of the season, so I am going to go for a home win, but the result of this game is bound to be close.
Harrogate 1-2 Chesterfield
Harrogate have had a solid, unbeaten start to the season, with them most recently beating
Barrow 1-0 on Tuesday night. However, standing in their way is a promotion favourite in
Chesterfield, even though they lost 4-1 to Gillingham, they have had a solid start to League
Two with collecting 9 points in 4 matches this season.
I think that Chesterfield is going to be the side to end Harrogate’s unbeaten start to the season with a narrow victory away from home.
Notts County 1-2 Bromley
Under the new manager, Martin Paterson, Notts County have had an underwhelming start
to their campaign, with them only picking up one point so far at the time of writing this
article.
In contrast, Bromley have had a successful unbeaten run, picking up 8 points and
scoring six goals so far, so I think the Hayes Lane outfit will come out on top in this fixture,
even with them being away from home.
Swindon 2-0 Shrewsbury
On returning to League Two after being relegated last season, Shrewsbury have had a tough
start, with them only picking up one point and only scoring one goal at the time of writing
this article.
However, the opposition, Swindon Town have had a couple of high scoring matches so far this campaign, so I can see them turning back to winning ways in this upcoming match after losing at home to recently promoted side Barnet 2-0.
William’s Predictions
Cheltenham Town 0-2 Barnet
Neither side has gotten off to the start they would have desired, currently sitting 24th and 18th in the table, however Barnet will be the more positive side going into this fixture, coming off the back of an impressive win over high flying Swindon Town.
Cheltenham, on the other hand, have lost their last four successive league games as well as bagging just one goal in that time, and based on their recent performances, I can see this continuing another week.
Gillingham 1-1 Crewe
In my humble opinion, this tie is by far the standout fixture of this gameweek, and it’s clear to see why this could be a thriller.
The Gills have picked up immense form under Gareth Ainsworth, having not lost in League Two since the 4th of March, whereas their opponents find themselves top of the table, yet to drop a point and conceding just two goals as of writing. I’d say there won’t be much between each side, a draw seems like a reasonable result.
Harrogate Town 0-1 Chesterfield
Chesterfield will undoubtedly be the favourites to pick up the three points this weekend, although I’d expect Harrogate to put up a serious fight, who remain unbeaten this season picking up a draw against strong Cambridge and Grimsby sides and scraping victories over Bristol Rovers and Barrow.
Chesterfield have recruited well so far this summer and have serious squad depth despite a few players out injured, but were stunned on Tuesday night by Gillingham, who comfortably saw the better of them, defeating them 4-1.
It will be tight, but I will back Chesterfield to pick up all three points.
Notts County 1-2 Bromley
Notts County haven’t gotten off to the best of starts so far under Martin Paterson, but at the time of writing are set to pick up their first win of the League Two campaign over a struggling Shrewsbury side, so could possess some momentum going into Saturday’s fixture.
But Bromley won’t be easily rolled over, currently sitting 7th and finding themselves unbeaten in both League and Cup, and with Michael Cheek up front, anything is possible for The Ravens!
I can see it going either way, but I’m edging towards a Bromley triumph!
Swindon Town 3-1 Shrewsbury Town
To summarise it simply, Shrewsbury have been abysmal. Completely abysmal.
Michael Appleton’s side have looked short of ideas and motivation; I couldn’t see a spark in their side when I watched their game against Colchester last Saturday and have clearly lacked it in their other games where they have picked up just a single point.
Swindon, in contrast, have been rejuvenated under Holloway, looking incredibly strong in the attack (albeit slightly weaker on the defensive side).
Swindon should win this tie comfortably, increasing any pressure on the Shrewsbury gaffer!
Charlie’s Predictions
Cheltenham 0-1 Barnet
With Barnet picking up their first win of the League Two campaign midweek against Swindon, they will surely be wanting to continue their winning ways against the early relegation favourites Cheltenham Town.
Cheltenham who currently sit bottom of League Two scoring only one goal it is easy to predict them to lose again. However, this is exactly what I’m doing, I predict a routine win for Barnet and a continuing struggle for Cheltenham
Gillingham 2-2 Crewe
This fixture shapes up to be the most interesting of all the league two action this weekend as both teams remain undefeated this season. Crewe have taken maximum points from their opening four games leading the league in not only position but also in goal scored.
Coming off the back of a 4-1 victory away at Fleetwood on Tuesday night they will sure to be full of confidence.
However, since Gareth Ainsworth’s appointment last season Gillingham have been undefeated in the league and will surely be looking to continue this run. I predict a tight game with quality all over the pitch with both staying undefeated in a 2-2 draw.
Harrogate Town 1-2 Chesterfield
Before the midweek fixtures I would have predicted a Chesterfield washout. However, with Chesterfield falling to their first defeat of the season on Tuesday night and Harrogate winning 1-0 at home to Barrow it predicts it to be a closer affair than I initially thought.
That said, I’m a real fan of this Chesterfield side this year and believe they will get back to winning ways at the first time of asking.
Notts County 2-1 Bromley
Despite a midweek thumping of Shrewsbury Town, Notts County have had a far from ideal start to the League Two season picking up just four points from their opening four games. On the flip side Bromley will be more than pleased with their start remaining unbeaten on eight points. Therefore, on paper it would be easy to predict an away win.
However, I feel that Notts County’s convincing midweek 4-1 win could prove to be a turning point for the season. In addition, with Notts County being at home I believe they could have the edge over the inform London side.
Swindon Town 1-1 Shrewsbury Town
After a poor Tuesday night display against Barnet derailed Swindon’s momentum, I unlike Chesterfield I believe Swindon will find it hard to bounce back.
Those at the County Ground on Tuesday night were critical of Holloway, saying he had been “out classed” by Barnet manager Dean Brennan calling out the outdated form of “hoofball” he has employed at Swindon since taking over.
Furthermore, with Swindon’s reliance on goals from Harry Smith, if he has a poor game, I can see Swindon struggling once again. However, playing a Shrewsbury side struggling to adapt to life in league two I believe the points will be shared.
Tom’s Predictions
Cheltenham 1-1 Barnet
Two sides here really struggling for points. Home advantage ‘should’ be enough, but I think Cheltenham fans are already ready for Michael Duff to come in!
Gillingham 1-1 Crewe
Both won 4-1 against Chesterfield and Fleetwood respectively last time out! Not sure there’ll be as many goals in this one, but it’ll almost certainly be a game of great quality.
Harrogate 1-2 Chesterfield
Harrogate continue to defy their season-on-season relegation odds and have started this campaign brilliantly. Chesterfield are bruised after midweek defeat but will bounce back here.
Notts County 1-0 Bromley
County beat Shrewsbury comfortably but have struggled otherwise, while Bromley have been steady and unbeaten. Does the big stadium take this one? Just about.
Swindon 3-0 Shrewsbury
Swindon have been hit and miss, but Shrewsbury have been pathetic. The question is ‘how many’ here.
Jacob’s Predictions
Cheltenham 1-1 Barnet
After a 5-0 thrashing on Saturday and another loss to Bromley Tuesday evening. Cheltenham currently sit bottom of the table managing 0 points in their opening 4 fixtures conceding 10 goals already this season.
The Robins battle Barnet at home, Barnnet have picked up one win so far this season. I believe that Cheltenham will get a much needed point in a 1-1 draw in front of the home fans.
Gillingham 0-2 Crewe
High flying Crewe Alexaandra sit top of the League Two table unbeaten in all four games and travel down to Gillingham who are seeing success sitting in a comfortable Sixth place with Gareth Ainsworth.
Continuing on with their brilliant form I believe that Crewe will quickly dispatch of Gillingham with a comfortable 2-0 win.
Harrogate 0-3 Chesterfield
Both in the top half of the table, Harrogate and Chesterfield battling to be in and around the promotion spots with Chesterfield sat 3rd accumulating 10 points in 4 and Harrogate amounting 8 points respectively.
I believe that Chesterfield will be able to defeat The Sulphurites 3-0 at the Exercise Stadium.
Notts County 0-1 Bromley
Bromley travel up to Nottingham to face a very underwhelming Notts County team only picking up one point in their opening fixtures whilst The Ravens sit 7th winning two and drawing one in their last three matches. I predict this fixture is a 1-0 to Bromley.
Swindon 4-0 Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury travel to The County Ground to face 12th place Swindon Town whilst currently sat in the relegation zone with one point in their last 4 matches. I believe that Swindon will beat Shrewsbury 4-0 at home.
