Lower Tiers Best 5: Championship Gameweek Three

The Championship delivered unforgettable moments, drama, and limbs in its second game-week last weekend. Now, with a new game-week upon us, five of our writers have predicted five of the best games in the division this weekend.

Let’s see what they predicted below.

Championship Predictions

Amar’s Championship Prediction

Norwich don’t do two on the bounce, apparently. In fact, it’s been half a year since they’ve managed to win twice in a row. I don’t think they’ll break that against a ‘Boro side who were tremendous last time out.

These are two sides surely aiming for at least a Playoff finish, but Middlesbrough have the momentum and Norwich’s new look defence will need time to gel.

Sontje Hansen to get one of the goals, what a signing.

Amar’s Prediction: Norwich City 1-2 Middlesbrough

Dylan’s Championship Prediction

Sheffield United welcome Alex Neil’s Millwall side to Bramall Lane this weekend with both sides having contrasting starts to the season.

The Blades come into this match rooted to the bottom of the table after an extremely poor start under new manager Ruben Selles, having lost all three competitive games so far this season, including a round one exit in the Carabao Cup at the hands of Birmingham City.

Their opening two league games has seen them concede a total of five goals, having lost 1-0 away at Swansea last weekend and 4-1 at home against Bristol City.

Millwall will travel to Sheffield hoping to replicate that, although are in a bit of transfer uncertainty at the moment with star defender Japhet Tanganga being heavily linked with a move to the Blades.

The Lions have had an inconsistent start to the season, with narrow victories away at Norwich City and Newport County (in the Carabao Cup) being followed up by an extremely disappointing 3-0 hammering at home against Middlesbrough.

They currently sit in 16th ahead of game-week three and are hoping to be up towards the top six, a win here would be very helpful towards that target.

It’s the start of the season, so expect big jumps in the table for either side if they win.

Sheffield United boast plenty of quality still with the likes of Gustavo Hamer, but Millwall are a well-drilled side and I think they will get the better of this tie.

Dylan’s prediction: Sheffield United 1-3 Millwall

Hannah’s Championship Prediction

Derby welcome Charlton to Pride Park in a fixture that already feels weightier than its early-season billing. The Rams have looked disjointed defensively, conceding soft goals and struggling to impose themselves in midfield.

Charlton, by contrast, arrive with a clearer identity under Nathan Jones, compact, aggressive, and capable of nicking results.

Derby will need a fast start and sharper transitions to unsettle the visitors, but unless they tighten up at the back, Charlton’s directness and set-piece threat could prove decisive.

Hannah’s Prediction: Derby County 1-2 Charlton Athletic

Jenson’s Championship Prediction

On Saturday, Preston meet up with Ipswich Town for GW3 of the new Championship season.

Both sides have had solid start. However the hosts come into this one with a confidence booster, succeeding 2-1 against Leicester City who are one of the sides expected to be firing at the top end of the division. Ipswich remain unbeaten so far, with two draws varying in performance levels, as their display against Southampton did show big signs of improvement.

The two teams do have quality however it does feel as if the extra additions to the Ipswich side may well tip them for victory. I believe Ipswich should seal their first win of the season in what will be a good game of football.

Jenson’s prediction: Preston North End 1-2 Ipswich Town

Lawson’s Championship Prediction

West Bromwich Albion will host Portsmouth at The Hawthorns as the Championship enters match week three.

The Baggies will be aiming to make it three successive wins to start the campaign, following victories over Blackburn and Wrexham.

Portsmouth fell to defeat against Norwich last time out and will be looking to correct their wretched recent form against the West Midlands club, losing 8-1 on aggregate last campaign.

John Mousinho will be hoping that new signing Josh Knight can make an impact after joining from Hannover 96 earlier this week.

Given Ryan Mason’s start to the season, I’d expect West Brom to run out comfortable winners.

Lawson’s Prediction: West Bromwich Albion 2-0 Portsmouth
