Lincoln City Prepare Bid For Europa League Man

Lincoln City are lining up a bid for Shamrock Rovers defender Josh Honohan, according to Irish Journalist John Fallon on his X page.

Who Is Josh Honohan

24 year old Honohan was born in Carrigaline in County Cork and started out with his hometown team. It was here where he was spotted by Cork City, whom he went onto make almost 60 appearances for before joining current club Shamrock Rovers, for whom he has also made close to 60 appearances. At such a young age, the Imps could potentially purchase Honohan and sell on for a profit in a few seasons time.

Where Would Honohan Fit In At Lincoln City

We all know by now that Michael Skubala is a BIG fan of a utility player. Honohan can play anywhere across the defence and on ether wing. Skubala will be targeting him as a left back though to replace Sean Roughan who joined Huddersfield Town in the summer.

Why Do Lincoln City Need Him?

Lincoln lost a good chunk of the spine of their team this summer, including Ethan Erhahon, Sean Roughan and Paudie O’Connor. Erhahon joined Bolton Wanderers and the Imps have his replacement signed in the past few days in Ivan Varfolomeev. O’Connor, who joined Reading was replaced by Sonny Bradley. Upto press Skubala’s side do not have a Roughan replacement, with Ryley Towler filling in at the moment.

Who Else Have Lincoln Signed This Summer?

At the time of publishing, the Imps have signed Sonny Bradley from Derby County, Ryley Towler from Portsmouth, Frankie Okoronkwo on loan from Premier League club Everton and Ivan Varfolomeev from Slovan Liberec. The Imps do desperately need a left back or two though and Honohan woul be a perfect fit.

What Issues Could The Imps Face?

At present Lincoln have two ‘overseas’ players as determined by the esc rules since leaving the European Union. These places being taken by Erik Ring and Ivan Varfolomeev. This could be a stumbling block for the Imps as could the fact that Honohan is also interesting Championship side Stoke City and League One rivals Wigan Athletic.

Aside from this, could Shamrock’s success be Lincoln’s failure here? Shamrock remain in european football after knocking out Portuguese outfit Santa Clara on Thursday Evening.

What Could Help Persuade The Irishman To Sign?

Before appointing Skubala, the Imps had declared an interest in Shamrock coach Stephen Bradley and even signed their midfielder at the rime, Danny Mandriou, before he eventually returned. could Bradley, Mandriou and even possibly Sean Roughan sell the League One club to Honohan and help the Imps secure his signature? Former Shelbourne attacker Jack Moylan could also have an influence on Honohan’s decision!

Could This Be Lincoln City’s Final Signing Of The Summer?

With Ryley Towler able to cover left back and Tom Hamer able to cover right back if required then this could be the last bit of business this summer as the Imps attempt to get the deal over the line before the deadline a week Monday.

How Are Both Teams Doing In Their Respective League’s?

Lincoln City have started brightly and are currently on 10 points, with 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. Their two early summer signings are doing well in Sonny Bradley and Ryley Towler. New boys Frankie Okoronkwo and Ivan Varfolomeev are slowly being integrated into the group.

Shamrock Rovers sit top having played 27 games and have won 15 of those and gained 8 draws along the way. Rovers have just 9 league games to go but are still in the Irish Cup and the Europa Conference League.

What Do You Think?
