With the transfer window slamming shut on Monday 1st September, clubs all across the EFL will be looking to pick out those final weak points and address them with signings before the deadline arrives. Reports from EFL Analysis believe that former Middlesbrough attacker Toyosi Olusanya is attracting serious interest from multiple clubs in both League One and League Two in the final days of the transfer window.
The ex-Boro attacker completed a move to the United States in order to join Houston Dynamo earlier in the year from Scottish side St. Mirren, however, the 27-year-old hasn’t enjoyed any real success and has found opportunities incredibly limited as of late.
EFL Analysis have revealed that multiple clubs spanning over both League One and Two are in talks. The list of interested sides includes possible promotion candidates Blackpool and Luton, with Northampton and Bristol Rovers. A return to Scotland is another possibility as Dundee and Hibernian are keen.
Consistency Ahead Of Goal A Real Struggle For Olusanya
Since completing his transfer to Houston Dynamo, Toyosi Olusanya hasn’t had it easy at all. With only nine appearances to his name since making the MLS switch, it’s been hard for opportunities, and that’s proven with zero goals scored in those few minutes.
The 27-year-old forward did gain a little success over in Scotland, though, as he appeared 31 times in the Scottish Premiership with St. Mirren, finding the net on 8 occasions in 2024/2025.
However, these struggles ahead of the net really aren’t surprising to look at. Following his move to Middlesbrough in 2021 from Billericay, the now 27-year-old forward really did find it challenging to make a name for himself at Riverside Stadium.
During his time with Boro, Olusanya only made three senior appearences, of which none saw him find the back of the net before then moving further north for his more successful spell at St. Mirren.
Can Olusanya Find His Footing At A Lower Level?
It’s fair to say longer term success has been a real issue for Olusanya across his career, and with the potential of another move, would a drop into League One or even League Two be the right move??
Clubs like Luton and Blackpool already have strong attacking ranks with additions this summer and in-house options boasting plenty of quality. Northampton also have attacking threat with Ethan Wheatley signing from Manchester Utd, and Bristol Rovers do have good qualities in attack for a League Two outfit.
However, we know that having plenty of players with varying qualities is important, therefore writing any of these moves off for Toyosi Olusanya at this stage wouldn’t be wise at all.
Form over in Scotland showed that the 27-year-old still can give something to a League One/Two outfit. There’s no denial there. However, would a move further down the footballing pyramid truly allow the former Middlesbrough man to find his footing?
It does seem as if taking the drop would be a good move. It would allow Olusanya to settle down back in England where he spent a good portion of his footballing career to date, and it would quite possibly allow the now 27-year-old forward to finally get regular minutes after such a stop-start year or so.
With such a good pedigree of clubs in for him but just days now remaining in the summer transfer window, will Olusanya get the move that could well help him get a fresh start and find some opportunites, or could a prolonged stay in the US be on the cards if interest initially shown fades as clubs look toward other targets.
