Gustavo Hamer Set To Leave Sheffield United?

For the entirety of his three seasons at Sheffield United, Gustavo Hamer has looked like a cut above the rest. Which is why when the club was relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2023/24 season, it was surprising that he remained a Sheffield United player.

Given the squad that they had and the parachute payments they would receive, it’s not unsurprising to assume that the Blades would be able to bounce back up to the topflight at the first time of asking. But they couldn’t.

How Did Sheffield United Do Last Season?

Despite finishing on 90 points (92 if it weren’t for a two-point deduction), United would finish 3rd in the Championship behind Leeds and Burnley who both finished on 100 points. After breezing past Coventry City in the play-off semi-final, United would find themselves up against Sunderland in the final, a team who finished 14 points behind them.

But that didn’t matter, and the Black Cats would score in the 95th minute to win and secure a return to the Premier League. Since then, Chris Wilder has been sacked and everything at Bramall Lane has somewhat fallen apart, with the club sat rock bottom of the Championship without a single point to their name.

It could soon become even worse, with PSV leading the race to sign Hamer. The 2024/25 Championship Player of the Season has also been heavily linked with a move to Leeds, but it seems like the midfielder will be moving back to his homeland.

Hamer has played the full 90 minutes in all four of Sheffield United’s league games so far, providing zero goals, zero assists and being booked three times. He came off the bench in an EFL cup tie against Birmingham where he did score, but the Blades would ultimately lose.

Has Hamer checked out? The fact that he has been booked in four out of his five matches whilst only contributing once seems to suggest so.
