Ruben Selles’ Sheffield United haven’t picked up a single point in the EFL Championship so far making Selles’ position at the Blades under pressure, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
So far in the 2025-26 season, the club have lost to Bristol City, Birmingham City in the Carabao Cup, Swansea City, Millwall and Middlesbrough resulting in their pointless nature.
With this the case, there has been much deliberation about which manager could replace Selles should he leave Bramall Lane.
The piece below identifies three managers who could replace Reuben Selles at Sheffield United.
Potential Managers Who Could Replace Ruben Selles At Sheffield United
Danny Rohl
Most recently of fierce rivals Sheffield Wednesday, Rohl typically plays with a 4-4-1-1 formation, which differs from Selles’ current 4-3-3 shape. The former Wednesday boss also guided the Owls to a 12th place finish in the EFL Championship last season even under difficult circumstances at times.
In recruiting Danny Rohl, Sheffield United would be getting a manager who can play exciting football and who can play under difficult circumstances.
But, given his history with Sheffield Wednesday and his arguable youth at the age of 36, his appointment could cause controversy amongst the Blades fanbase.
Luke Williams
Luke Williams is a name most known with Swansea City and Notts County fans. The Englishman guided Notts County to a promotion from the National League to EFL League Two before departing to the Swans last year.
But, upon his arrival at Swansea, he struggled to embrace the success that had seen him become so well-favoured at County. In his time at the Swans, Williams lost 28 games and only won 19 games with his side drawing eleven times under his guidance.
If he were to join Sheffield United, the Blades would arguably be taking a risk. But, given his record at Notts County, it could be a risk that can turn out to be successful.
However, his appointment may be matched by argument and debate in the fanbase as they try to assess whether he can be successful for their team.
Chris Wilder
Our last option falls in the form of former United manager Chris Wilder. The manager, now aged 55, had managed the Blades before Ruben Selles arrived at the club. His spell with the Bramall Lane outfit saw his side win 34 times whilst they only lost 31 times.
But, the manager’s inability to get Sheffield United promoted to the Premier League following defeat against Sunderland saw the 55-year-old depart the club.
Now, with Selles arguably under pressure, a return for Wilder could be on the cards, for the second time.
If Wilder was to return to Bramall Lane, his return may be met with a large sense of familiarity.
However, for the section of the fanbase who may want something new, the return of Chris Wilder may not be something that they want.
Which Manager Would Be Best For Sheffield United?
Each of the three managers named above would bring many qualities to the club. But, their arrival at the Blades would each be met with their own controversies and criticisms.
Whilst Wilder would offer a sense of familiarity and perhaps even normality, an appointment such as Williams and Rohl would offer something new and would give a chance to a younger face.
However, nothing can be decided yet until the future of Ruben Selles is decided. If he is sacked then the Blades may look towards one of these three options.
But, Sheffield United could also choose to look towards another option such as Ian Evatt or even Gareth Southgate – if he wanted to come into club management.
