Lower Tiers Best 5: League Two Gameweek Nine Predictions

League Two returns this weekend with Swindon Town looking to remain at the top of the table.

Chaos, goals, and drama throughout EFL League Two last weekend saw Swindon Town end the game-week on the top of the table.

Now, with a new game-week upon us, five of our writers have predicted the best games in the division this weekend.

Let’s see what they predicted.

League Two Gameweek Nine Predictions

Charlie’s Predictions

Cambridge United 2-1 Fleetwood Town

A wise man once said, “you never back the early kick off” and with Cambridge United vs Fleetwood Town kicking off at 12:30 no prediction can be assured for this fixture! Nevertheless, I shall try my hardest to decipher which way the points will be allocated at Abbey Road this weekend.

On paper, both teams should be evenly matched with only one position separating them in the league table.

Furthermore, both teams come into the game off the back of 1-1 draws. It’s a tough one; Fleetwood will surely be hoping for more than midtable this season while Cambridge I’m sure will have had to reevaluate their end of season targets based on their opening form.

A draw seems logical here, however I could see either team snatching it by a narrow 1 goal. I slightly favour the home team, 2-1 Cambridge.

Bromley 1-2 Chesterfield

For me Bromley are this season’s surprise package so far! Reaching as high as 3rd so far in League Two. I for one did not see them being this successful, I didn’t think they’d be relegated by any means, but I didn’t seem them anywhere near the automatic places.

Bromley now sitting 7th though could indelicate a slight dip in form, Chesterfield are no strangers to this dip either, sitting just a place above them in 6th. With that being said, Chesterfield come off the back of two difficult games away to Walsall and more recently a home fixture against MK Dons.

This makes me feel like Chesterfield should get back to winning ways, I predict a 2-1 win for the away side.

Salford City 0-2 Swindon Town

This week’s blockbuster fixture! 1st vs 3rd ladies and gentlemen. Like Bromley I didn’t see Salford pushing for automatic promotion this season, yet impressive wins against Shrewsbury, Tranmere and Notts County have seen them win four of their last six games.

Swindon however boast an even better record, having achieved five wins from their last six games. While it was a slow start for Holloway’s Robbins, they have certainly found their feet. I believe Swindon will once again put the win in their name as they travel to south Manchester.

I predict a 2-0 win for Swindon.

Colchester United 0-2 Bristol Rovers

Four games ago this would have been a bottom of the table clash that I probably would have found hard to predict, yet Bristol Rovers are now the most inform team over the last five games in League Two.

Despite their less-than-ideal start the Gas have picked up wins against Newport, Barrow and my own Grimsby Town. While I have to say I wasn’t blown away by the style of football Rovers played, it is certainly effective at nullifying the opposition.

On the flip side despite an impressive 24/25 campaign, Colchester are yet to get going sitting in 19th just two points outside the relegation zone. So, we have a struggling Colchester vs the most inform side in the division, this is the typical game you put in your acca as the sure thing that ruins it all.

Colchester love a 1-1, I should predict a 1-1… but I just can’t see Bristol Rovers slowing down at the moment. I predict a 2-0 win for Rovers

Walsall 2-0 Tranmere Rovers

Walsall are a funny one for me; despite not losing in their last four games because of last season’s miracle bottle I’m just constantly waiting for them to capitulate in glorious fashion. Yet will it come this year?

Many of the players that suffered that promotion bottle were snapped up by higher league clubs therefore I don’t believe any of that disappointment remains in their dressing room.

On the other side, I will admit Tranmere are one of the few sides within the 92 that I know relatively little about nor care anything for them.

I know Mike Dean supports them; that’s about it. For me, the early indications show that it’s going to be another mid table finish for the Merseyside club.

All this put together, I predict Walsall to extend their unbeaten with a win. I’m going 2-0 Walsall!

Jacob’s Predictions

Walsall 2-0 Tranmere Rovers

Rovers will trade Birkenhead to travel North of Birmingham. Taking on a 4th place Walsall side who want to continue their fine form as of late.

The travelling side have struggled with recent form, picking up one point in their last three fixtures. With Walsall being a low scoring side I think it will be a tight game however I believe Tranmere’s defense will let themselves down.

I am predicting a 2-0 for the home side.

Cambridge United Vs Fleetwood Town

Cambridge United host 11th place Fleetwood Town for a 12:30 kickoff on Saturday.

Both teams have struggled to build any sort of momentum with each team sat mid table on 11 and 12 points respectively. Both teams are going to be battling it out to climb closer to those elusive playoff positions.

However I believe this game will end in a stalemate. 1-1 draw and a well needed point for either side.

Colchester United 1-3 Bristol Rovers

The Gas travel to a struggling Colchester side this weekend. Bristol Rovers have finally found their form in their last 5 matches, winning four and drawing one, now looking like the side many thought would be sat comfortably at the top.

On the flip side Colchester haven’t managed a win in their last five and only one win all season.

I will predict a 1-3 finish in favour of Bristol Rovers.

Bromley 1-2 Chesterfield

Two clubs who have been off the ball in recent matches now battle it out to get one step closer to the automatic positions.

Bromley have surprised many with their form this campaign and are wanting to continue this. After two tough results in the two previous matchweeks it will be a tough task to face a very good attacking line.

However, with a very leaky defence, I see advantage for the home side with Bromley taking home the three points in a 2-1 victory over The Spireites.

Salford City 3-3 Swindon Town

The two high flyers so far this season and neither have gone unnoticed.

Swindon lead the whole EFL in goals scored this campaign amounting a monumental 17 goals. With both teams carrying exceptional form, I believe this game will be a dramatic one ending in a 3-3 draw after the final whistle.

Leo’s Predictions

Bromley 1–1 Chesterfield

Bromley have had a good start to the 25/26 season, with them picking up 13 points in 8 matches, which has led to them being placed 7th in League Two so far this season.

Promotion favourite Chesterfield are similar to the Ravens, picking up 14 points in 8 matches, and they currently sit 6th in the League.

With Bromley losing their last match to Oldham and Chesterfield drawing against MK Dons, both sides will be looking to get back to winning ways. However, with Bromley being the home side, I can see them taking the 3 points.

Salford City 2– 3 Swindon Town

Salford have had a decent start to their 25/26 campaign after missing out on the playoffs last season. They are currently sitting 3rd on 16 points, and they have most recently beaten relegated side Shrewsbury Town 3-1 away from home.

However, with Swindon having an electric start to the season, picking up 18 points, and are currently sitting 1st in the table. Also, with them beating Harrogate Town at home 3-1 last weekend, this shows that there is nothing stopping Town.

So I am going for a very narrow 3-2 victory to Swindon with Swindon having good away form. They could win it more comfortably in my opinion, but Salford are at home.

Walsall 1–0 Tranmere Rovers

Walsall, who lost in the playoffs last season, have had a good start to League Two with them picking up 16 points in 8 matches, and they currently sit 4th in the table.

Tranmere Rovers currently sit 16th on 9 points; some could argue that they have struggled so far this campaign.

In my opinion, I think that Matt Saddler’s side will edge this tie over Rovers and get back to winning ways after their 1-1 draw at Fleetwood last time out, and especially with Tranmere only picking up 4 points away from home.

Cambridge United 2–2 Fleetwood Town

Cambridge are looking to be promoted back to League One this campaign after being relegated to League Two last season.

The U’s have picked up 11 points and they currently sit 13th in League Two so far this campaign.

However, the opposition Fleetwood, who finished 14th last season, have picked up 12 points and position 11th in the League.

I can see both sides having a much improved performance, with them both drawing and losing their last two games.

However, with both sides looking for a win and Cambridge placing 8th in the home form table, as well as Fleetwood positioning 7th in away form, one. I think that this game is going to result in an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Colchester United 0–2 Bristol Rovers

Colchester are looking to go a step further this campaign after missing out on the playoffs last season.

The Essex-based side have had a poor start to this campaign, with them sitting 19th on 7 points in the table after playing 8 matches.

However, Bristol Rovers, who are back in League Two following relegation last season, have picked up 13 points and are 9th in the standings.

I can see Bristol Rovers carrying on their good form and their unbeaten run in this game.

So I think Bristol Rovers are going to have a comfortable 2-0 victory in this one, especially with Colchester’s poor home form.

Tom’s Predictions

Bromley 1-1 Chesterfield

The Spireites are winless in three, while Bromley have their own mixed form. Perhaps two lower confidence, but good, teams will play out a low scoring draw.

Salford City 1-3 Swindon Town

Swindon can match local rivals Bristol Rovers’ four successive wins. Salford aren’t far behind with seven from the last nine available. Still, Swindon take this one – and they bring goals!

Cambridge United 0-0 Fleetwood Town

The pair are comfy mid-table at the moment (13th & 11th) with the exact same form: W, L, D. Both run tight ships so a goalless draw isn’t off the table – a rare prediction!

Walsall 2-0 Tranmere Rovers

10 points plays four in the last quartet of matches, meaning a Walsall win seems inevitable. The Midlands side have actually only scored a single goal in each of those four, so goals galore feels ambitious.

Colchester United 0-2 Bristol Rovers

DC’s Gas are now the EFL’s most in-form side! Gasheads will recognise the added control they seem to have in games, albeit late goals and pressure have become somewhat common. Colchester are winless in five and the play-off chasing U’s will continue that run here.

William’s Predictions

Colchester United 0-4 Bristol Rovers

Here we go again. This fixture is a rivalry between two of this article’s writers, me against Tom, and in no way do I see myself coming away with the last laugh, given the recent form of both sides.

The Gas have won their last four games in League Two, and are expecting them to comfortably extend this winning run, given Colchester could only manage three shots against bottom of the table (at the time) Accrington Stanley last Saturday.

It can’t go on like this can it?…

Salford City 1-2 Swindon Town

This seems to be this weekend’s spiciest fixture, 1st versus 3rd in the table hopefully won’t disappoint, especially given Swindon’s record in front of goal and neither side holding a particularly impressive defensive record alongside their attacking prowess.

Can Swindon continue their immaculate run of form?

Well, I certainly believe they can, given Drinan’s fine scoring record and Hollway’s crafty tactics, although Salford will surely put up a good fight, given their high spending recruitment late in the summer window.

Bromley 1-1 Chesterfield

6 Vs 7th face off on Saturday, and I personally can see a very close game on the cards coming up.

Bromley’s form has dipped slightly recently following their shock defeat to Oldham last weekend, in what was their first loss of the league campaign.

Likewise, the Spireites are struggling too, without a win in their last four games despite being one of the league’s promotion favorites. I’m going for a one all draw, which feels like the most logical option, given their similar starts to the campaign.

Cambridge United 1-0 Fleetwood Town

From what I’ve seen of them, Cambridge United seem like a well-drilled team but are lacking that final edge to find their consistency to climb up the League Two table, as they are currently sat in 13th place.

Their opponents Fleetwood Town are two places above them, and are off-the-back of a close and hard-fought point against Walsall. Cambridge’s home form has been their saving grace so far this season.

I’m predicting this impressive home form to continue.

Walsall 3-1 Tranmere Rovers

Walsall are absolutely flying this season, finding themselves in 4th place, holding the joint record for the best defence in League Two so far this season, conceding on just five occasions.

Despite starting this season with high optimism, Tranmere are yet to hit the ground running, with just one point from their last nine available and despite their plus three goal difference, are still stuck in the bottom half of the table.

I’m predicting Walsall’s attacking players to finally click and comfortably beat Tranmere, who I’m guessing Omari Patrick scored yet another goal for!
