Burton Albion vs Bolton Wanderers Preview and Prediction

Burton Albion host Bolton Wanderers this weekend, here's all you need to know about the League One clash.

Burton Albion play host to Bolton Wanderers as they look to build on their 1-1 draw with Doncaster Rovers.

The Brewers may have lost their midweek Vertu Trophy tie, but in the league things have started to pick up for Gary Bowyer’s team. After losing 4-0 to Plymouth Argyle, they beat high-flying Cardiff City 1-0 before securing a well earned point away at Doncaster.

As for the Trotters, they will be looking to end their away hoodoo and secure their first win on the road this season with the teams only two defeats this season coming away from home.

In the pair’s last five meetings it has been Bolton Wanderers who have had the better luck, winning the last three games against Burton.

In the last fixture between these two, the Trotters ended a long wait for a win at Burton, securing a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from midfielders Aaron Morley and Josh Sheehan. Not only was this Bolton’s first win at the Pirelli in decades but it was also Steven Schumacher’s first ever win their too.

It’s been a minute since the Brewers got a victory over Bolton, with their last win over the Wanderers coming back in 2022 with a 3-1 win, that then put a huge dent in the Trotters play off ambitions that season.

Key Stats

  • Despite securing five points from their last five games, Burton Albion have only scored twice in that time.

Burton Albion Team News

Bowyer’s Burton are finally starting to pick up some points following their abysmal start to the season.

The Brewers named a must changed team for their 1-0 loss to Chesterfield in the Vertu Trophy and expect several of their starters to return for this league clash.

Unlike many League One sides, Albion aren’t hit by the international break too hard, with Toby Sibbick unavailable as he represents Uganda. With that being said, now is the time for Burton to build some league form.

Possible Lineup

Bradley Collins (GK), Udoka Godwin-Malife, Jack Armer, Finn Delap, Alex Hartidge, Sebastian Revan, Kyran Lofthouse, George Evans, Charlie Webster, Tyrese Schade, Jake Beesley

Bolton Wanderers Team News

Schumacher’s Whites head into this one desperate for that first away win of the season. Following last week’s 2-1 win over Peterborough United, the only thing to add to the Trotters play off CV is some success on the road.

Unlike Burton, Wanderers will be without two players on international duty for this game with Josh Sheehan set to play for Wales against England today and Eoin Toal with Northern Ireland.

One of the major positives to come out of Bolton’s win last weekend was the performance of Cyrus Christie, who made his league debut for the club. Schumacher is now set to have a selection dilemma with Josh Dacres-Cogley back from injury.

Elsewhere Will Forrester and Victor Adeboyejo remain out as they continue to recover from long-term injuries. Jordi Osei-Tutu is training but not available for this game.

Possible Lineup

Teddy Sharman-Lowe (GK), Cyrus Christie, Chris Forino, George Johnston, Max Conway, Ethan Erhahon, Xavi Simons, Amario Cozier-Duberry, Marcus Forss, Thierry Gale, Mason Burstow

Burton Albion vs Bolton Wanderers Prediction

The Brewers are doing their best to become a difficult side to play but the majority of their points have come away from home. Bowyer will hope to adopt a similar plan to when his side beat Cardiff and keep Bolton off the ball.

As for the Wanderers they have to see this as a prime opportunity to get that first away win. Schumacher will know how he expects Albion to set up and now has the physicality available to combat it. The first goal is key in this one, alongside if Bolton can keep it tight at the back at set pieces.

This one will be settled by one goal but I have the Trotters getting that win but they’ll have to work for it.

Prediction: Burton Albion 1-2 Bolton Wanderers
