League Two: The 3 Sides Currently In Trouble Of Relegation

League Two's relegation battle is close currently with just seven points separating the bottom ten sides in the division.

We’ve looked at the Championship. We’ve looked at League One. Now we cast our eyes to the fourth tier and the most feared relegation zone in the EFL.

Relegation from League Two of course leads to the National League, the first tier of non-league football.

The National League is filled with former EFL sides who have been unable to regain their football league status, such as Rochdale, Forest Green Rovers and Southend United.

Let’s see which sides in League Two will be doing everything in their power to avoid being added to the list.

League Two At Risk Sides

Newport County

The team currently bottom of the EFL is Newport County who had made a solid start to the campaign, beating Barent on penalties in the EFL Cup, drawing at home to Notts County and beating Crawley Town in their first three games.

But, it all went downhill after that, and it went downhill very quickly.

The Exiles’ win against Crawley was on the Ninth of August would be the Welsh side’s last point of August with County not picking up another point until the 13th of September when David Hughes’ side drew against Tranmere Rovers.

After that, they wouldn’t win a game until the Seventh of October when County went to League One outfit Cardiff City in the EFL Trophy and pulled off an upset.

Newport would carry the momentum from that win into their next league game against Accrington Stanley, where the Exiles would pick up their first league win since the second game of the campaign.

Unlike several of their relegation rivals, Newport are actually in a decent bit of form at the moment, picking up two wins in their last three games.

If Hughes’ side are able to keep this up, then there is no reason as to why they can’t pull away from the relegation zone.

The Exiles are currently only seven points between them and 14th place Colchester United.

Crawley Town

The other team currently in the relegation zone is Crawley Town, which is surprising considering that they were one point away from staying up in League One last season.

Over the course of the last six league games, the Red Devils have the joint worst form in the division, with only one win and one draw in that time.

Looking at the positives, this win was in Crawley’s most recent match against Bristol Rovers so in theory, Scott Lindsey’s side have some momentum right now.

Furthermore, this win was very convincing with Crawley scoring four without reply.

Cheltenham Town

Cheltenham might not be in the relegation zone at the moment, but they are very much in the crosshairs of relegation.

The Robins have scored the fewest goals in the league (10) and conceded the joint most goals (25).

Almost half of the goals that they have conceded came in two matches, a 5-0 loss against MK Dons and a 7-1 loss to Grimsby Town.

Only five players in the squad have got on the score sheet in the league this season and almost half of the goals have been scored by Isaac Hutchinson (4).

To their credit, Town are unbeaten in the last four games, winning three. Just like Newport, Cheltenham need to keep this up if they want to ensure their football league status.

Who Survives?

In terms of the teams in the seven-point gap between 14th and 24th, it is quite possible that Colchester, Barrow, Tranmere and Oldham Athletic will all be League Two sides at the very least next year.

As for the three teams highlighted, Shrewsbury Town, Accrington Stanley, Harrogate Town and Bristol Rovers, uncertainty remains.

However, there is still a long way to go.

Therefore, by the end of the season, two completely different teams could drop out of the EFL from the three highlighted above.
