Could This Finally Be Gillingham’s Year?

Gillingham have been mid-table recently, could this be the season the Gills manage to push on and reach League One?

Gillingham have been somewhat of a mid-table team the past few seasons finishing 17th and 12th in the past two seasons in Skybet League Two. Could this be about to change?

The Gills currently sit in 8th position, just 1 point off the final play-off place. Gareth Ainsworth’s side have 7 wins, 7 draws and just 4 defeats this season.

August started brilliantly with 2 draws and 4 wins for Ainsworth and his players.

The final 3 games of November, however, the Gills managed just 3 draws. On Saturday they face Colchester United who sit just one point behind them.

The Players At Gillingham

Experienced players such as Sam Vokes, Bradley Dack, Gareth McCleary and Jonny Williams have all been around long enough to know how to grind out a promotion which is what could be needed.

With that being said, Gareth Ainsworth is known for his fast free-flowing football.

Seb Palmer-Houlden, formerly of Newport County provides pace on the wing, with former Huddersfield Town man Aaron Rowe also not scared of a bit of running.

Experience is definitely the name of the game at the Priestfield Stadium.

The Board

American duo Brad Galinson and Shannon Galinson, provide the funds for the Gills and for Ainsworth and whilst Profit and Sustainability could come into the argument, they could provide a few pounds for a January chest should Ainsworth require it.

Following the tenures of Stephen Clemence, John Coleman, Mark Bonner and Neil Harris, it’s nice to see a bit of consistency in Kent.

The Conclusion

With experienced heads and an experienced manager, not much will stand in the way of Gillingham gaining promotion to League One.

With that being said, teams such as Notts County, this year’s surprise package Bromley, Cambridge United and Salford City all being in form, the Gills will need some big results between now and the end of the season.

The board could play their part as well, Ainsworth will have his contacts and may need to call upon some to add competition for places at the Priestfield Stadium.

Either way, buckle up Gills because this won’t be easy.
