A short amount of time has elapsed since the home kit edition of the best kits so far in the EFL, but enough that I feel like there has been enough releases to do a comprehensive dive into
the nicest away kits this time around.
Of course, clubs are somewhat limited in terms of how far they can push their creative boats
out with home kits as they’re of course usually made up of the clubs’ primary colours and
tend to have a far more ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ approach during the design process. So
away and third kits are the majority of clubs’ main chance to showcase some real creativity.
And in this case of away kits, it’s for me to judge who’s succeeded in this the most so far this
season, so let’s begin.
The Best Away Kits In The EFL Championship
In the Championship, I’d be lying if I said that we’ve been spoilt for choice this season, and I
wish it was a change on the home kit pick but for me, Charlton and Reebok have got this
one, like their home number, absolutely spot on. I think that the trim and colour for the
clean sponsor, simplified crest and retro supplier being black beautifully bonds well with the
aquatic blue and white primary and secondary colours.
There is also a tremendous nod to their ‘Addicks’ nickname through the fish scale pattern and aquatic colours, eluding to legendary local fishmonger Arthur Bryan who provided haddock meals to the players back in the day.
The Best Away Kit In EFL League One
Onto League One, where there is a varied and lovely selection of shirts on the whole, credit specifically to Plymouth Argyle and Stevenage whose kits are smooth, clean and classy. But once again Port Vale and Wimbledon are in another league. These are two gorgeous kits which feature retro, striped designs however this time I’m going with the Dons and their horizontally striped black and green number.
Lotto have truly nailed it with this one, and made a green shirt look incredible which I think is what makes it stand out as it’s very rare to see a vibrant green kit, especially one that’s done incredibly well.
The black certainly allows the green to pop as well, and the two colours complement each other perfectly. The War Child sponsor is also a touching one to have on the front of a kit, classy.
The Best Away Kit In EFL League Two
Last but not least, League Two where I’d like to shout out Bristol Rovers whose black
patterned design works really nicely with their traditional, unsymmetrical blue and white as
accent colours on the collar and sleeves.
But for me, Grimsby’s blue and red collared away kit is arguably as close as you’ll get to perfection in the fourth tier, potentially the whole of the EFL. A sensational tribute to their iconic 1994/95 away shirt, famously donned by legend Ivano Bonetti who appeared in the promotional video for the shirt. After a 30 year wait for a blue and red striped kit to return to the east coast, Mariners fans will be over the moon with this one.
