Bradford City Interview: Previewing The New Season With Roman McCarthy

Bradford City will be playing their first EFL League One game since 2019 on the 2nd of August against Wycombe Wanderers at the University of Bradford stadium.

Ahead of this fixture, I sat down with Bradford City fan Roman McCarthy (@RomanMcCarthy4 on X) to review all things Bradford City.

Before we start, I would like to take a moment to thank Roman for taking part in the Bradford City interview. His responses are insightful and reflect the current mood within the Bantams fanbase.

The Bradford City Interview

How Did You Find The Celebrations Last Season?

“The celebrations were very mixed I would say. Obviously after the final game there was a mix between relief that we’ve got it done and shock because in my lifetime, I’ve never seen something like that.

Obviously living away from Bradford and having to travel back home to Grimsby wasn’t great as I’d have rather carried on the celebrations in Bradford but it was probably the best day of my life overall.”

What Was Your Favourite Moment Of Last Season?

“My favourite moment of last season has to be Sarcevic 90+6. I don’t think it gets much better than that.

But, I think there was a few moments last year that stand out such as the equaliser at St Andrews. When Bobby (Pointon) equalised, that away end was electric. I also think the Crewe game at home was a good moment considering we were top of the league and after that I thought we would have gone on to make it easier for ourselves.”

What Do You Think About The Club Currently?

“I think the club now is going in the right direction and I’d like to give a massive shoutout to Ryan Sparks and Stefan Rupp who I personally didn’t like a good season and half ago.

But, when we appointed David Sharpe, I think it has made their jobs easier and they’ve done a great job. I think the club is on the up now. The fans are buying into the club and they are excited for next season.”

Do You Think Bradford City Are Prepared For The 2025-26 Season, And Why?

“I think with happy Graham Alexander in charge, we will be prepared. Obviously, the lads are going away to Austria this week and it’s the hardest week of pre season. I also think the additions we have made have been very good and I think we will make Valley Parade a fortress again.”

What Is Bradford City’s Strongest Area Of The Field?

“I think our strongest area on the field would probably have to be our attacking line. I think we have got some real quality in there than can turn teams over next year. The likes of Swan, Kavanagh, Sarcevic, Pointon and obviously Humphrys who is a quality player we’ve signed. We’ve also got Andy Cook coming back from his ACL injury he suffered in January.”

What Area Do City Need To Improve In The Squad The Most?

“I think the area we need to improve is our midfield at the moment. I think we have some good players in there but i think we lack depth in there at the moment.

Obviously having Max Power, Alex Pattison is good and Tommy Leigh seems to play in midfield a lot. I think letting (Richie) Smallwood go was not a great decision as I think if we had given him what he wanted our midfield would be sorted.”

What Are Your Thoughts On The Upcoming Season?

“My thoughts for next year are full of excitement as there is plenty of new teams and grounds to tick off and I think we will do really well.

I would like to say somewhere mid table but momentum in football is key and we could really push the top 6 if we continue our momentum. But, I think mid table would be okay for our first season back in League One.”

Why Is Graham Alexander The Right Man For Bradford City?

“If I am being honest, I was not a fan on Alexander when he got announced but now I would put him down as a legend because of what he has done with this team and club over the past 18 months. I think he has a style of play and he executes it very well. I think he understands the fans and what we want to see. Players give it their all for the badge under him.”

What Has Been Our Best Signing Of The Summer So Far?

I think our best signing this summer has to be Stephen Humphrys. I think with (Andy) Cook not featuring until October, we needed to go out and sign an attacker of his quality. But, I also think Josh Neufville and Max Power are very good players at this level.

Can You Give Me Your Prediction For How Bradford City Will Do Next Season?

“I think we’ll finish somewhere between 10-15th. If any higher I will be very happy but I think if we use the loan market right and we use Valley Parade as a fortress again, we could surprise a lot of people. But, mid-table in our first season back would be good.

I also think our away form needs to be better than last year as we only won 5 games away all season. If you do that in a league above we could struggle especially if injuries hit us as well. But, I have faith in the squad and Alexander to be prepared for the first game of the campaign.”
