League Two strugglers Shrewsbury Town and Newport County are chasing Salford City defender Kevin Berkoe on loan
The Lower Tiers understands League Two duo Shrewsbury Town and Newport County are both chasing Salford City defender Kevin Berkoe on loan, as they look to add to their squads to escape the relegation danger they find themselves in.
Both the above clubs have been struggling for form and find themselves in a fight to avoid the drop, and they’re hoping to act quickly to add Berkoe to their ranks.
24-year-old Berkoe had unsuccessful spells at Premier League club Chelsea and Championship outfit Oxford United, failing to make a senior appearance for either side. He then joined current club League Two promotion hopefuls Salford City.
Berkoe has played 32 times for the Ammies and has also had loans with Telford United, Altrincham, Maidstone United, Woking and most recently Rochdale, it now appears his future could be in League Two, granted not with Salford though.
Despite playing at left-back, Berkoe has also scored six goals in his career and added four assists.
The Ammies are having a successful season in League Two as the look to gain promotion. Karl Robinson’s side sit third and have won four of their last five matches.
The Shrews have struggled this season and currently occupy 22nd place, just three points outside the drop-zone. The club have recently replaced Michael Appleton with Gavin Cowan as they look to turn around their season.
Unlike the Shrews, Newport do find themselves in the relegation zone in 23rd position. New boss Christian Fuchs has said he is impressed with how much his players are trying though. That will count for nothing if they don’t get results.
Berkoe will have a choice to make between the two struggling sides, or he could choose to remain with Salford City and fight for his place.
