Gameweek 6 provided plenty of entertainment across the Championship, League One and League Two, but here are the players that stood out above the rest at the weekend. All match ratings were provided by the website Fotmob. Read on to see who is in our team of the week.
GK – Jake Eastwood – Cambridge United
Cambridge United keeper Jake Eastwood gets the first slot on this week’s team of the week, for his star performance on Saturday against Newport County, in which he earned himself an 8.5 match rating on Fotmob. He’s been enjoying his consistent run of starts following his summer departure from Grimsby Town, where he mainly featured as the second-choice option during his two-year spell.
Eastwood didn’t have the busiest of games, but prevented an xG 1.04, keeping his second clean sheet of the campaign, where he made three close range saves to prevent Newport establishing themselves in the game. This has helped Eastwood earn his place in our team of the week.
LB – Ross McCrorie – Bristol City
Taking the left back position is Ross McCrorie, who became the assist king in their home fixture against Hull City, becoming the provider for two of their four goals during their 4-2 victory over The Tigers. Bristol City continued their unbeaten Championship run, whereas opponents Hull lost their second consecutive game, conceding seven goals.
His first assist came in the 18th minute, opening the scoring for The Robins when he latched onto the end of Zak Vyner’s cross, knocking it back to Emil Riis Jakobsen to fire home from close range, and his second assist came just fourteen minutes later in fairly similar fashion, heading a cross into Anis Mehmeti’s path to score from the same range as Riis. Fotmob rewarded him with an 8.6 match rating, helped a lot by his two assists
CB – Omar Sowunmi – Bromley FC
Bromley’s Omar Sowunmi had a stunning performance at both ends of the pitch, as he scored their second goal in the 81st minute during their 2-0 victory over Harrogate Town, as well as winning the highest number of defensive duels on the pitch by a country mile, with 16 completed, earning himself an 8.8 Fotmob rating for his contributions.
His goal came from a header (not surprising for a 6-foot 6-inch centre-back) from Mitch Pinnock’s freekick into the box from just over the halfway line, doubling Bromley’s advantage and continuing their unbeaten start in the league, as they now sit third in the League Two table.
CB – Nathaniel Phillips – West Bromwich Albion
Nathaniel Phillips’ goal in the 14th minute not only broke the deadlock, but also turned out to be the matchwinner, ending Stoke’s flawless Championship start, simultaneously launching WBA into the second-place position.
Phillips also had a solid defensive record, albeit not being tested on too many occasions, winning 100% of his tackles, 83% of his duels and making 14 clearances during the 90 minutes, but his main standout moment was his goal, coming from a spill from Stoke goalkeeper Viktor Johansson, who dropped the ball straight into Nathaniel Phillips’ path who calmly slotted into an open net, raising his Fotmob match rating to an 8.7, the highest rating from this fixture.
RB – Vontae Daley-Campbell – Chesterfield
Chesterfield came back from two nil down on Saturday, to draw 2-2 against Scott Lindsay’s struggling Crawley side, with Daley-Campbell’s attacking vision being the catalyst to their comeback, as he provided the assist for both of The Spireites’ goals with him finally enjoying a run of games following a lengthy layoff due to injury.
In the 56th minute, Daley-Campbell teed up Dylan Duffy to score an absolute wondergoal, after skipping past the defender to fire into the bottom left corner of the goal. His second assist came just two minutes later, following a rapid break from a Crawley corner, Chesterfield pushed on, trying to find an attacker in space, until eventually Daley-Campbell’s pass found Armando Dobra in the centre of the penalty area after being left by Ronan Darcy.
CM – Ryan Wintle – Cardiff City
Cardiff players seem to be on our team of the week’s regularly, due to their players consistently performing week in week out since their relegation to League One. The first of two to feature on this article, Ryan Wintle had a masterclass in midfield during their demolition victory over Plymouth Argyle, picking up an assist for their fourth goal in injury time, as well as opening the scoring with a goal.
His goal came in the 41st minute, and was an absolute screamer, off the back of plenty of passing around the wings and inside the box, Rubin Colwill found Wintle on the edge of the box, who slammed it past the Plymouth goalkeeper, marking what was arguably the goal of the day. The assist was quite a bit less impressive however, passing out to the wing for Isaak Davies, who did all the hard work to bag his goal.
CM – Gavin Kilkenny – Swindon Town
Swindon have seemed like a new and revitalised side under Ian Holloway, and stunned league leaders Crewe Alexandra in the lunchtime kick-off, firing Swindon into the playoff positions. Kilkenny is the man who deserves the most credit for these valuable three points, as not only did he open the scoring for The Robins, but he also created the most chances at four, as well as holding a 100% accurate passing record.
Kilkenny’s goal in the 8th minute was a thing of beauty, despite plenty of passing options either side of him, he chose to fire a rocket into the bottom left corner from outside the penalty area, evading Crewe goalkeeper Tom Booth’s outstretched hand, which boosted his Fotmob match rating to 8.8. This has helped his cause and included him in our team of the week.
CM – Ruben Colwill
The second Cardiff City man to feature on this list, Colwill picked up the highest rating on Fotmob in the entirety of League One, with 9.0 overall, mostly thanks to his goal and assist during their battering of Plymouth Argyle. Additionally, he created the most chances of any player with four as well as having four shots on target throughout the 90 minutes.
His assist set up Ryan Wintle’s thunderbolt which has already been mentioned, with his goal coming just after the start of the second half, when he picked up a loose ball and dribbled past full-back Matty Sorinola, before his shot took a wicked deflection off Brendan Wiredu, leaving the goalkeeper helpless to prevent it going in.
CF – Emil Riis Jakobsen – Bristol City
Bristol City’s attack had a wonderful day against Hull City, bagging on four separate occasions against The Tigers, and Emil Riis Jakobsen was the man of the moment, scoring two of the four goals, opening his account with The Robins in style. He received a 9.2 rating on Fotmob, inflated thanks to his 7 shots throughout his 84-minute cameo.
The Danish’s first goal of the season came in the 18th minute, when fellow TOTW player Ross McCrorie found him in bags of space to fire into the net from a few yards out, with his second being a lot more skilful, intercepting Charlie Hughes’ terrible first touch, taking himself into a one-on-one situation, before comfortably putting it past the keeper. This has earnt Jakobsen his place in our team of the week.
CF – Davis Keillor-Dunn – Barnsley FC
In their Yorkshire derby against Huddersfield Town, Keillor-Dunn was The Tykes’ Starman in front of goal, who capitalised on Owen Goodman’s early red card to double his League One goal total for the season, bagging two. This brace was rewarded by Fotmob by giving Keillor-Dunn an 8.9 overall match rating.
The opening goal came in the 9th minute, just after he’d been prevented due to a fine double save from Owen Goodman prior to his dismissal, taking advantage of a spill from the goalkeeper (a day Goodman will undoubtably want to forget) to slot it into an empty net. He was forced to wait 75 minutes to double his tally, when yet again a spill from the goalkeeper (this time Lee Nicholls) ended up at his feet to score in similar fashion.
ST – Josh Sargent – Norwich City
Sargent continued his immense run of form, scoring in every single Championship game he’s played in so far, and he did it in style with a brace against 10-man Blackburn Rovers, which earned him a 9.0 rating on Fotmob, a place in our TOTW and the position as Championship top scorer!
After a couple of shots slightly too far over the bar, Sargent finally capitalised on his opportunity from the penalty spot, straight after he was fouled in a one-on-one by Sean McLaughlin who immediately saw red, with his penalty sending the keeper the wrong way to break the deadlock. Following on from a dry spell for Sargent, he added a second for the game in the 91st minute, dribbling away from both centre-backs before firing it past Toth in goal. This has earnt Sargent his place in our team of the week.
