Exeter City Close In On Key Man

Exeter City are the frontrunners to re-sign Crystal Palace goalkeeper Joe Whitworth on loan, according to local media.

The Journey Of Joe Whitworth

The 21 year old spent last season on loan at St James Park and he kept an impressive 16 clean sheets in 51 appearances for the Grecians, impressive for his first loan away from his parent club. It is these stats that have alerted many clubs in the third tier, with several League One clubs enquiring about his availability, however, it seems the Devon based club have won the race for his signature.

Whitworth might not be the only Palace keeper allowed to leave on loan this coming season with Owen Goodman on the verge of joining fellow League One side Huddersfield Town. Both will struggle to get into side following the signing of Walter Benitez and with Remi Matthews signing a new deal at Selhurst Park.

Being a lifelong Palace fan Whitworth will know the importance that this sort of loan could help to develop his career and help him to push his way into the first team. Knowing his new teammates already will also be a massive help, albeit with a few new faces.

With Whitworth being contracted until 2027, this move is unlikely to be permanent. It’s no surprise that the Grecians have re-entered the race, Whitworth was named Supporters Player of the Year last season.

With Harry Lee informing the club of his intension to depart, this leaves the club needing at least one keeper. Following their 16th placed finish in League One last season, Gary Caldwell will be hoping his side can push even further up the table as they look to consolidate in the league.
