Wigan Athletic are believed to be eyeing a move for Swansea star Ollie Cooper this summer in what is an ambitious target for The Latics, as the League One Outfit continue their busy start to the transfer window, via reports from Football League World and Alan Nixon.
Cooper would be able to leave Wales for a bargain deal or a loan switch, and Wigan are expected to be right at the front of the line to make an enquiry into the Wales-Capped midfielder this summer in what would further add to an impressive transfer window for The Latics.
Wigan Look To Build Competitive Squad This Summer
With Ollie Cooper the next Wigan target, it continues to show the story of what Ryan Lowe’s side could be preparing for next season. Attacking additions of Paul Mullin and Dara Costelloe set up a bold strike force, alongside acquiring Christian Saydee and Fraser Murray.
As the window goes on, it only seems like Wigan are going to continue adding, and with the high ambitions of bringing the 25-year-old midfielder to further bolster their options, it seems as if The Latics could be serious contenders for at least a play-off place next season under the fantastic managerial abilities that Lowe possesses at this level.
What Might Cooper Bring To The Brick Community Stadium?
Ollie Cooper enjoyed a good portion of minutes with Swansea in the Championship last season, and despite not scoring goals or grabbing headlines, if Wigan were to complete a move it could be a brilliant bit of business for the League One outfit.
The Welshman is a versatile player, which could open up options for him with Wigan, as he can play in the central midfield role, attacking midfield and also in a wider position on the left hand side.
Also, considering he is a more advanced style of midfielder, Cooper had some of the highest percentages for defensive actions last season showing that he is plenty capable of doing multiple jobs out on the pitch.
The 25-year-old has plenty of technical attributes which may benefit Wigan massively, as his Championship experience carried over into League One would provide The Latics with a quality player to lock down a couple of positions in their midfield, with versatility and technical prowess just some of the good bits included in Cooper’s locker of attributes.
Would Wigan Be A Good Move For Ollie Cooper?
At this point in time, making the move to Wigan could be crucial if Ollie Cooper wants to push towards further Wales appearances but also to really kick on at this stage of his career, and a move back down to League One could just get the best out of the 25-year-old.
All Cooper has really known is the Wales region of football. He’s spent time in Newport but a majority of his current playing days have been with Swansea, so moving away from home might be a tough but challenging step to take.
Wigan seem to have the perfect set-up currently to meet the Welshman’s needs, however, and a move to The Brick Community Stadium should be something to consider.
The Latics will continue to monitor Cooper’s situation with Swansea, but already there are some key indicators which prove that it might be a perfect opportunity for the 25-year-old to move away and get some good minutes and really kick on as Wigan look to push on towards the top end of League One.
