Middlesbrough are in talks with Southampton as they look to finalise a deal involving a forward with Championship pedigree.

Southampton are prepared to let Adam Armstrong leave the club in January, with fellow Championship side Middlesbrough in talks to sign the Saints’ top scorer.
The Saints are looking for bids worth around the figure of £8m, before any potential add-ons.
It is understood that Southampton feel the time is right to cash-in on the English forward, and Armstrong’s departure will help them explore a late-window signing to bolster the club’s forward options.
With failed signing Damion Downs and Adam Armstrong heading out the door, and Cameron Archer experiencing heavy interest, the Saints are set for a busy final week of the transfer window.
While Middlesbrough and Southampton close in on a full agreement for the sale of Adam Armstrong, and Wrexham remaining interested, the Saints are looking to sign a replacement striker.
The Saints will be searching for a different profile to Armstrong, who is less of a conventional centre forward, despite scoring 11 goals so far this season.
While names such as Josh Sargent may have been floated about by the Saints faithful, at this stage in the window, a move for the American, who wants a move home to the MLS, looks unlikely.
Johannes Spors will be desperate to pursue a move for a striker this month.
If a move fails, the German Sporting Director will be in hot water, with injury-prone Ross Stewart and consistently poor Cameron Archer left in the running.
With the Saints barely in reach of the play-off places, it appears Spors is admitting full surrender this season, cashing in on Armstrong in return for any slight promotion hopes the club may have had, letting Armstrong go to a potential play-off rival.
The Saints sit in 15th place, with just one win in their last nine games – a poor campaign so far.
