With Swansea City’s play-off hunt coming to a halt, it’s a perfect time to reflect on this season’s loanees. With an eye on next season, could these Swansea City loan players get into the first team?
Despite Vitor Matos’s best efforts, his squad still looks a few new players away from play-offs.
Although Swansea will need new signings this summer, gaps in our squad could be filled with players returning. On the other hand, is it in the Swans’ best interest to move some players on?
This season, Swansea have reignited their connection with Falkirk with the two young prospects heading up north.
Promising defender Filip Lissah has impressed on his first loan move whilst Kyrell Wilson, off the back of half a season with Yeovil, has boosted Falkirk’s attacking options.
Filip Lissah has been talked about in the academy for years after joining from Chelsea’s under 18s in 2021. The Czech Republic under-21 capped defender has impressed massively in his first season in men’s football.
With just over 2,000 minutes played for Falkirk this season and 23 games played in the league, including impressive performances against Rangers and Celtic, he looks like a handy player to bulster Swansea’s defensive regions.
The versatile right footed defender has been preferred at right back for the majority of this season, whilst also playing left back and centre back when needed.
With Swansea’s lack of defensive depth, Lissah is the perfect option to have as defensive cover for the likes of Josh Tymon and Ben Cabango and could even make a push to claim the available right back position.
His partner in Scotland, Wilson has impressed with 21 league games featured this season including a goal on his debut. However, the winger hasn’t met the high heights of Lissah this season.
Although he has proven a threat off the wing for Falkirk, I think another loan move is likely for Wilson in the summer. The 21-year-old is a bright prospect and hopefully can be in and around the first team in the years to come.
Young Welsh duo, Cameron Congreve and Joel Cotterill, have impressed for Dundee FC this season with both being key for the Scottish team. Congreve joined the Dee in the summer whilst Cotterill joined late in January.
Congreve has been a bright spark this season with two goals and seven assists. The Welsh winger has also created 45 chances this season of the right flank.
After impressing for Bromley last season with 13 G/A, it could be time for a shot in the first team. Congreve offers creativity and output from wide positions, which Swansea’s wingers have struggled with.
Swansea’s three contracted wingers have four goals and eight assists this season, which has massively hindered their play-off chances.
The side’s wingers struggle with crossing whilst Congreve specializes in crossing. Congreve has more than double the amount of successful crosses that Ronald and Inoussa have combined. Looking at next season, it’s only fair that Swansea give Congreve a shot off the right flank.
Cotterill has impressed as well in midfield since making the switch from Bristol Rovers to Dundee FC in January. The midfielder scored a crucial goal in their 3-2 win against Aberdeen.
However, with Swansea’s strong depth in midfield, it is unlikely that Cotterill will break into the first team next season. Another loan move is highly likely as he continues his development.
Florian Bianchini signed for Swansea City in the summer ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Since then, the French attacker has struggled to meet the pace of English football. After a lacklustre first season, the man who signed for a rumoured €2 million was sent to Portsmouth on loan.
Despite being praised by Portsmouth fans after his first two games, he has since fallen short of expectations. The 24 year old has registered 10 appearances, with one assist, and has battled with a knee injury since December.
Ultimately, he has been left out of the Portsmouth squad and is unlikely to play for them again. As he comes back to Swansea in the summer, it will be interesting if he is given another loan in a different division or if the higher ups will try and recuperate some of the money spent on him.
Probably the most intriguing out of all the Swansea City loan players mentioned. 19-year-old Kit Margetson has massively impressed whilst out on loan to Connah’s Quay Nomads this season.
The son of Martyn Margetson, Swansea’s long serving goalkeeping coach, has started every match this season in the Cymru Premier this season.
This has led to scouts from teams such as Manchester United travelling to watch him play.
Although there will be interest in him, it may be amazing to see the shot-stopper stay in Swansea City and although he won’t be our number one next year, he is a perfect long term successor for Lawrence Vigouroux.

What about Josh thomas
Seth Davies says:
He’s doing well out in Ireland at the moment. Interesting to see if he will get a loan to an English club in the summer.
