The Loan Players Peterborough United Fans Love

Never falling in love with a loan player is a rule that is hard not to break in football and Peterborough United fans have found it tough not to.

Here are five recent loanees from the last decade that Posh fans could not help falling in love with:

Martin Samuelsen

For the 2015/16 season Posh took a gamble on 18-year-old West Ham United prospect Martin Samuelsen. Safe to say the Norwegian did not disappoint.

Samuelsen only scored two goals in his first loan stint with the club but it was the impact on the ball that Posh fans remember. His Lionel Messi like goal versus Sheffield United will be forever remembered as one of the best Posh goals of all time.

Martin also played a major part in the Emirates FA Cup run that season scoring versus Championship Preston North End in the third round then his performance versus at the time Premier League West Bromwich Albion will be remembered in Posh folklore in the fourth round replay.

Samuelsen sadly, struggled to get going after returning to the Irons being plagued by injuries and eventually ending up in the Eliteserien at FK Haugesund.

Steven Benda

In the 2022 January transfer window, Posh took a gamble on goalkeeper and Swansea loanee Steven Benda.

The keeper only played 11 games for the club however, he played a huge part in that seasons Emirates FA Cup run which saw Posh knocked out by Premier League giants Manchester City.

Benda’s performance versus QPR in February 2022 could be considered one of the best goalkeeping performances ever seen by a Posh player. He broke Posh hearts by not returning but will be forever welcome at London Road.

Jimmy-Jay Morgan

Peterborough United’s 2025/26 season has had many ups and downs so far but a real highlight so far has been the signing of Jimmy-Jay Morgan on loan from Chelsea.

Jimmy-Jay came into a very poor Posh side but his partnership with Harry Leonard soon came to fruition. He scored three goals in his first three games. Since February Leonard has been ruled out with a Hernia and Jimmy-Jay has taken the reigns of scoring goals taking his tally to 14 goals in all competitions.

The England u20 international has been utilised more as a number ten since Luke Williams took charge and his versatility has come on leaps and bounds with Posh fans praying he can stay for longer than just this season.

Sammie Szmodics

Sammie Szmodics was part of the Peterborough United super team in 2020 joining in January on loan from Bristol City. The former Colchester man flew out of the blocks in a Posh shirt scoring his first goal versus promotion elects Rotherham in a memorable team goal.

From this Sammie continued his fine form scoring a brace at Portman Road against Ipswich and becoming part of a lethal front three of him, Siriki Dembele and Ivan Toney.

Sadly, for Posh the season was cut short due to Covid 19, but Sammie left an impression and Posh fans were delighted to see him sign permanently in September 2020 becoming a fan favourite.

Nathanael Ogbeta

Nathanael Ogbeta was signed in January 2023 on loan once again from Swansea City. Posh were in need of a left back in a season where Posh had collapsed after the Derby-Day victory over Cambridge United.

Ogbeta came in and instantly became a fan favourite after his superb cameo versus Forest Green Rovers off the bench.

Nathanael cemented his legacy at Posh with his performance versus Derby County in front of a sell out Weston Homes Stadium. His love to drive with the ball was causing havoc for the Rams and grabbed his first Posh goal when he followed in on an Kwame Poku shot.

He went somersaulting away in celebration and cemented himself in Peterborough United fans hearts for the rest of his time at the club.
