Wycombe Wanderers Have “Lacked A Killer Edge” – WycombeDJ Talks To The Lower Tiers

The Lower Tiers had the opportunity to talk to Wycombe Wanderers fan WycombeDJ about the club and how Michael Duff has done.

Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe Wanderers currently sit just outside of the playoffs in the EFL League One so far this campaign, with them positioned 8th on 43 points.

Now, with the remainder of the season inevitable, Wanderers will be looking to climb up the table and potentially reach the playoffs within the remainder of the season.

Ahead of their next fixture against Reading on the 14th of February, I sat down with WycombeDJ to talk all things Wanderers in a Wycombe Wanderers interview.

Before we start, I would like to thank Wycombe fan WycombeDJ for taking part in this Wycombe Wanderers interview. His responses were informative and aim to give you an insight into Wycombe as a club currently.

The Wycombe Wanderers Interview

Wycombe Wanderers currently sit 8th in the league. How do you feel your team has performed so far this season?

“It’s been interesting, we started really quite poorly under Mike Dodds and for a while were floating above the relegation zone, so to be putting pressure on the promotion playoff runners under Michael Duff is great work.”

Compared to your feelings before the season started, would you say your thoughts now are more positive or negative?

“I think we all expected to fight for promotion out of gate after last season and the increased spending, but it’s more positive in a way because we have an experienced manager in Duff now instead of Dodds, we’ve made good signings in January and got rid of some fringe players.”

Who would you say has been your best player so far this campaign?

“Tricky one, Fred Onyedinma has always shown flashes of excellence but this season he’s really started to gain more consistency to match that ability, while Anders Hagelsjær is developing into an absolute Rolls Royce in the backline.”

Who has surprised you the most this season, and why?

“Dan Casey at Centerback who came in from Motherwell in Scotland, expected him to be solid if unspectacular, but has really came into his own and formed a brilliant partnership with Anders.”

How do you feel your team has performed in cup competitions this season?

“We did pretty solid, but cups are never really a priority for us.

“We took Fulham to penalties in the EFL Cup which we can absolutely be proud of, and it was a great performance early on into Duff’s time.

“A 4-0 loss to Exeter in the FA cup however was absolutely woeful. The Bristol Streets Paint John’s [Vertu] Trophy? You only ever care once you teach the final.”

Do you think your manager Michael Duff has done a good job this season since coming in, and why?

“Oh absolutely, we were a team with technical quality, but lacked a killer edge in the box to actually score, the discipline to defend well, and the physicality to battle in the league.

“Duff came in, made us physically stronger with the same players and got us stopping the leak in the backline.

“Considering too he had no pre-season and none of his own signings until January, he did very very well considering the circumstances.”

Have your owners supported your team enough this season?

“I believe so yes, Mikael Lomdatze isn’t a hands on figure at the club, but clearly isn’t shy of funding the club both on the pitch and off it, so long as it’s got a genuine reason to be funded.

“He’s got big big plans, and while some of them are long term, he’s shown a willingness to invest in the now too.”

Which position has been the most beneficial to your side this season?

“Tricky one that, I think it’s a solid enough team all over the pitch, but I do think our backline is extremely strong.

“The starting lineup of Daniel Harvie, Anders Hagelsjær, Dan Casey and Jack Grimmer all work together fantastically.”

Which position do you feel has held your team back the most this campaign?

“Strikers.

“Cauley Woodrow has started scoring again after a fairly hefty dry spell which is absolutely great to see, but we had a period where goals from him could have easily turned draws into wins.

“Bradley Fink hasn’t gained the trust so far of Duff outside of some cameos or enforced changes.

“Nathan Lowe has joined on loan but is still injured at present. They simply can’t replace Richard Kone yet, albeit very few strikers could.”

What do you believe to be a realistic aspiration for your team in the closing stages of the season?

“I think we absolutely have the opportunity to keep fighting to push into the bottom half of the promotion playoff spots, we’re 7th in the form table for the last 10 games.

“There’s no shame in having this being a stepping stone before a stronger push next season, but we still have the opportunity to keep pushing this season too.”
