As reported earlier on, AFC Wimbledon were admirers of former Preston North End and Liverpool striker, Layton Stewart.

Wimbledon have now confirmed these reports with the striker joining the Dons on a loan deal subject to international clearance, as revealed on their official website.

The striker is set to join up with the Dons after two seasons with Swiss side FC Thun where he played 21 games and scored four goals in all competitions.

He has previously enjoyed success with Liverpool academy, where he also gained a Carabao Cup appearance for the first team during the 2022/23 campaign.

In the 2023/24 season, he appeared 16 times for Preston in the Championship, which will give Dons fans hope he can perform at League One level.

With the striker being 23, Johnnie Jackson and his coaching staff will hope the Layton Stewart joins the side with the hunger to prove his worth within the English pyramid.

Meanwhile, with no outgoings in the attacking areas, this January, the striker will have to fight off competition within the squad in order to earn his place in the starting eleven.

AFC Wimbledon are currently sat one point above the drop in League One and are much needing of a striker who can score goals and offer competition for those who are currently out of form.

Johnnie Jackson and his squad look ahead to a clash with Port Vale tonight after the game was postponed last Tuesday due to a waterlogged pitch.

A defeat to Bolton Wanderers at Plough Lane on Saturday left many Dons fans uneasy despite the second half improvement, so the side will look to bounce back with three points.

Wimbledon fans reading this, what are your thoughts? Is this a panic signing or one which could prove vital in deciding our league status come the end of this campaign?
