Barnsley are reportedly closing on a deal for the services of Manchester City defender as the transfer window closure nears.
Barnsley will be aiming for success in the rest of the League One season as the outfit looks to climb the table and avoid the relegation.
The Tykes, currently 15th in League One, lost 4-0 to Cardiff City on the 27th of January, allowing City to have 15 shots.
Meanwhile, the outfit has conceded 41 goals and kept 2 clean sheets, putting them on a goal difference of -1.
As well as this, with manager Connor Hourihane opting for three centre-backs within his formation, he arguably needs an increased amount of depth across the back three, especially with Jake Rooney returning to Derby County in the early stages of the window.
With this in mind, Barnsley could look to recruit a defender in the closing stages of deadline day to help offer the squad depth, quality and limit their leaky defence that they arguably hold.
Now, the Tykes are closing in on a deal to sign defender Isaac Smith on loan from Manchester City, according to Sky Sports News.
The 20-year-old within the academy has only featured twice for Manchester City under 21’s so far this season, as well as this in the 23/24 season, the defender only featured seven times for the under 21’s.
For Smith, a move to Barnsley could offer an opportunity for development, gain more game time and compete with other defenders.
It could be argued that the lack of game time Smith has had this season in the academy may show that he is not ready for the step up; however, it could be a potentially good move for both parties.
Whilst the Tykes are trying to get the addition over the line, Barnsley supporters who hold interest could look to see how the defender could benefit the squad in the short term.
