Bristol City Manager Search Takes Fresh Twist

Lincoln City’s future takes fresh twist as Bristol City activate release clause

Michael Skubala’s future at Lincoln City has taken another significant turn after Bristol City activated his release clause, following reports just 24 hours earlier that he was set to remain at Sincil Bank.

It was first reported on Friday (May 8) by Pete O’Rourke that Bristol City had identified Skubala and Portsmouth FC head coach John Mousinho as leading candidates in their search for a new manager following the departure of former England boss Roy Hodgson.

Skubala’s work at Lincoln City FC has drawn growing attention, with his reputation strengthened by his tactical organisation, player development, and the steady progress made since taking charge in November 2023.

His ability to implement a clear structure and identity has made him one of the most highly regarded young coaches in the EFL.

By yesterday, the expectation had been that Skubala would remain at Lincoln despite external interest, with sources suggesting he was likely to continue leading the club into the next campaign.

That view reflected optimism internally at Sincil Bank that their head coach would not be tempted away during the summer.

However, that position changed this afternoon, with BBC Radio Lincolnshire reporting at around 5.30pm that Bristol City had formally activated Skubala’s release clause, moving to open official discussions over a potential appointment.

The activation of the clause allows Bristol City to engage directly with Lincoln over compensation and begin negotiations with Skubala’s representatives over personal terms.

It marks a clear escalation in their pursuit of the League One Manager of the Season.

Skubala has been widely praised for his impact at Sincil Bank, where he has overseen a strong spell in charge and built a consistent playing style that has translated into results and progression on the pitch.

His stock has risen significantly as a result, attracting attention from higher divisions.

For Bristol City, the move represents a decisive step in their efforts to appoint a new head coach as they reshape their direction following Hodgson’s departure.

Mousinho remains another name previously considered, reflecting a broader shortlist of managers admired for their work in competitive environments.

Lincoln City now face a key period of uncertainty as they await further clarity on whether talks progress into a formal agreement or whether Skubala remains in place ahead of pre-season planning.

Further developments are expected in the coming days as discussions continue between all parties.
