Burton Albion have officially secured their EFL League One status after a hard fought 1-1 draw against Exeter City at the Pirelli Stadium.
The point was enough to confirm survival, capping off a tense but ultimately successful battle against relegation for Gary Bowyer’s side.
The game started nervously for the Brewers, with the visitors taking the lead in the 14th minute through Ilmari Niskanen. Burton found themselves under early pressure, knowing the significance of the result.
However, the response after half time was exactly what was required.
Jasper Moon equalised in the 61st minute, converting from close range after good work from Brewers captain Udoka Godwon-Malifé.
From there, Burton controlled large spells of the game, having consistent pressure in the final third, with 16 shots to Exeter’s six, with the visitors only managing one shot on Brad Collins goal throughout the game.
Heading into the fixture, Burton knew that one point would be enough to secure survival, and they delivered under pressure, ensuring yesterday’s opponents could not catch them from 21st position.
The result moves Burton to 53 points, creating a conclusive gap between themselves and the relegation zone with just one game remaining.
It marks a significant achievement given the club’s position throughout the campaign, where they were heavily involved in the relegation scrap.
With the Brewers now unbeaten in their last five matches, a run that has proved decisive in pulling clear of danger, Gary Bowyer’s side have showed an improved organisation and strong defensive structure in recent weeks.
Several players have stepped up recently during the survival run in.
Their contributions have been crucial in ensuring Burton were able to cross the line.
For Burton Albion, the objective was clear, stay in League One.
But while safety is secured, the Brewers will know that improvements are needed if they are to move away from the bottom end of the table and establish themselves more comfortably in the division in the future.
For now though, this point against Exeter represents a defining moment, one that ensures Burton Albion will remain a League One club next season.
