Cheltenham Town And Newport County Clash

Cheltenham Town host relegation threatened Newport County at the EV Charger Points Stadium on Saturday.

Steve Cotterill’s side secured their League Two status last Saturday with a thumping 4-0 win away at Walsall.

Newport still have some work to do if they want to remain in the EFL, Barrow’s late comeback win over Oldham Athletic midweek has left Newport in a precarious position sitting just one point above the drop.

Christian Fuchs‘ side won last time out against Harrogate Town but with Barrow picking up a win in the week the pressure is really on in the final three games.

Memorable Matches

The sides are no strangers to one another and have met in various competitions over recent years but I have picked out a few matches which have stood out.

Cheltenham Town 1-1 Newport County – 19th January 2021

A game that took place during lockdown that ended 1-1 might not look like a lot to shout home about on the face of it but County ‘keeper Tom King went on to break a world record.

King scored directly from a goal kick 105 yards out and beat the previous record which was set in 2014 by Asmir Begović.

Cheltenham went on to win League Two that season while Newport fell at the final hurdle losing in the play off final to Morecambe.

Cheltenham Town 4-7 Newport County – 12th November 2019

It feels weird putting a EFL trophy game under a category called “memorable matches” but it’s hard to ignore a game with 11 goals in.

Newport needed to win by a certain amount of goals to qualify from the group stages so do it away from home while scoring seven goals is something that can’t be ignored.

Newport County 0-2 Cheltenham Town – 18th October 2025

Cheltenham came out on top in the most recent clash between the sides winning comfortably at Rodney Parade thanks to a Luke Young brace.

It was Cotterill’s second match since returning and the 61-year-old was able to make it two wins from two.

It was 23rd v 24th back in October but since then Cheltenham have pulled clear from that position.

Newport are still fighting and will be hoping for a reverse of October’s result as they look to take a huge step towards survival.
