Cheltenham Town Appoint Director From League Two Rival

The position of ‘Managing Director’ is a newly created position for the club as they improve its infrastructure under the leadership of owner Mike Garlick.

While the news surrounding the appointment dropped around the halfway point of May, James Watts has now officially worked his notice period with Swindon and will join up with his new Cheltenham Town colleagues in a matter of weeks.

The announcement of a Managing Director is just one of many changes happening over the summer at Cheltenham, as the club improves facilities in and around the ground.

The club have already announced the replacement and sale of wooden seats that have been present at Whaddon Road since the 1960s.

A training ground expansion, improved kit room and an upgrade of the canteen are also underway.

Previous Experience

James Watts brings a plethora of experience in similar roles of this nature, having already worked for the likes of Hereford, the previously mentioned Swindon and Newport County.

The role will see Watts work closely with owner Mike Garlick, in addition to improving revenue growth and the continued development of Cheltenham Town for years to come.

“Standout” Favourite

Talking to the media at Cheltenham Town, Mike Garlick commented on the new appointment saying “We conducted a thorough recruitment process and James was the standout candidate.

“Not only does he bring a comprehensive understanding of all the commercial aspects of the game but also excellent communication, man management skills and experience.

“I’m confident he will be a valuable asset to Cheltenham Town Football Club and I look forward to working closely with him in order to drive the club forward.”

Additionally, Watts also spoke with the Cheltenham media team and expressed his excitement to be joining the club this summer.

“This is a club on the up and it is an exciting time to be joining.

“There is huge potential here and a strong sense of community, I can’t wait to get started and look forward to working with the fans, Board of Directors, staff, partners and sponsors to help drive this club forward.”
