Derby County 2019 Play-off Final Squad: Where Are They Now?

As Derby County is looking to make the play-offs in the final game of the season, we are taking a look back at Frank Lampard’s 2019 play-off final squad, which lost 2-1 to Aston Villa.

Derby County finished 6th in the league in the 2018/19 season, beating Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds team 4-3 on aggregate to qualify for the play-off final at Wembley.

GK – Kelle Roos (Kilmarnock)

Kelle Roos featured 24 times for Derby in the 2018/19 season, and stuck around at Pride Park until 2022, when he left for Aberdeen.

The 33-year-old Dutch goalkeeper is currently on loan at Kilmarnock from Notts County, where he has kept 3 clean sheets in the Scottish Premiership this season.

LB – Ashley Cole (Retired)

The play-off final vs Aston Villa was the Chelsea and England legend’s last ever match before retiring. Cole joined Derby in January 2019 and was mainly used as a back-up to Scott Malone, who picked up a red card in the second leg of the play-off semi-final vs Leeds.

Ashley Cole has recently become the manager of Italian side Cesena in Serie B, where he has picked up 1 win in his first 6 matches.

CB – Fikayo Tomori (AC Milan)

The now 28-year-old was on loan at Derby from Chelsea during the 2018/19 season. He returned to Chelsea alongside manager Frank Lampard, the pair both left the club in January of 2021.

Tomori signed a permanent deal with AC Milan after his initial loan expired. The 5-time capped England international has racked up over 200 appearances for the Italian giants, winning the Scudetto in the process.

CB – Richard Keogh (Retired)

The then Derby County club captain, who had spent 7 years at the club, had his contract terminated a couple of months after the play-off final, after he was involved in a drink-driving caused car crash along with teammates Tom Lawrence and Mason Kane Bennett.

The 26-time capped Irish international returned to football a year after the mentioned car crash, as he was recovering from a knee injury caused by the impact of the crash.

Keogh played for 6 different teams in the EFL between 2020 and 2024 before retiring, having last played for Forest Green Rovers. Currently, Keogh is an assistant manager to Conor Hourihane at Barnsley.

RB – Jayden Bogle (Leeds United)

The promising English right back stayed at Pride Park for another season after failing to secure promotion in the play-off final, before signing for Sheffield United.

Bogle has made 32 appearances in the Premier League for Leeds United this season, with 1 goal and 1 assist.

CDM – Tom Huddlestone (Retired)

The experienced midfielder left Derby in the summer of 2020 as a free agent. Huddlestone signed for Hull City in 2021, where he ultimately retired a year later.

The former England international was notably a player-coach for the Manchester United U21 team between 2022 and 2024. Currently, Huddlestone is an assistant coach at Birmingham City.

CM – Mason Mount (Manchester United)

The Chelsea loanee played a big part in Derby’s 2018/19 season, scoring 8 times and assisting a further 4 goals.

Mount featured in 195 games for Chelsea, with his crowning moment coming in the 2020/21 Champions League final, where he assisted the winning goal.

The 36-time capped England international left Chelsea for Manchester United for a fee of £55m. Mount has struggled with injuries during his time at Old Trafford and hasn’t (yet) made the impact the United fans were hoping for.

CM – Bradley Johnson (Retired)

The play-off final was Johnson’s last match for Derby County, as he signed for Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2019. Johnson retired in 2024, having last played for MK Dons in League One.

Johnson is currently the lead coach for Derby County’s U18 side, a role he has performed since June of 2025.

CAM – Harry Wilson (Fulham)

The Welsh international was another loanee in Lampard’s side in the 2018/19 season, during which he scored 15 goals in the Championship.

This season, Wilson has 10 goals and 6 assists in the Premier League for Fulham. The 29-year-old’s contract with Fulham expires this summer, leaving him linked with several top Premier League clubs.

ST – Tom Lawrence (Perth Glory)

The second Welsh international in the squad, Lawrence, stayed with Derby County until 2022, when he left for Rangers in Scotland.

Lawrence picked up an Achilles injury in his first season in Scotland, which kept him out for close to a year. Lawrence ended his 4-year stint with only 69 appearances, in which he scored 12 times.

Currently, Lawrence is playing for Perth Glory in the A-League, having scored 5 goals this season.

ST – Mason Kane Bennett (Harrogate Town)

The English striker left Derby for Millwall in January, after he didn’t score in the first half of the 2019/20 season.

Bennett spent 4 seasons at Millwall, scoring 6 league goals in his best season.

Currently, Bennett is playing for Harrogate Town, with zero league goals this season.

Substitutes

Jack Marriott (Reading)

The Englishman was the only goalscorer for Derby in this match. Marriott left Derby County in October 2020, after a poor 2019/20 season.

The striker is currently playing for Reading in League One, having scored 16 times in only 24 matches. Marriott recently scored all 3 goals in the Royals’ 3-2 win over Wycombe.

Martyn Waghorn (Anstey Nomads/ Deportrio)

The experienced striker stuck around Derbyshire until 2021, when he signed for Coventry City.

Waghorn came out of retirement in late 2025 and signed for Anstey Nomads. Waghorn has also featured regularly for Deportrio in the Baller League UK. Waghorn’s teammates in Deportrio include Marc Albrighton and Josh Harrop.

Florian Jozefzoon (Retired)

The former Suriname international never found form at Derby following his move from Brentford. Jozefzoon left Derby County in 2020.

The tricky winger last played for CF Intercity in Spain, during the 2024/25 season.
