Derby County are expected to complete the signing of FC Utrecht left-back Derry Murkin before the transfer window closes, with the move addressing a clear area of need for John Eustace’s side.
The Telegraph’s deadline day live blog has reported that Derby are actively working to bring the 26-year-old in before the window shuts, with Eustace having made the addition of a left-back a priority in the final hours. Any deal for Murkin is expected to be completed in time.
This development will come as welcome news to Rams supporters. Derby’s lack of depth at left-back has been evident ever since Owen Beck was recalled by Liverpool earlier in the season.
Beck, who had been signed on loan to provide competition and cover, never made a first-team appearance at Pride Park due to injury, leaving Callum Elder as the only natural option in the role for much of the campaign.
Murkin only joined Utrecht last summer, arriving in a €1.2m move from FC Schalke, but he now appears set for a fresh challenge. Despite being born in Colchester, this would be his first experience of English football, having spent his entire professional career on the continent.
His development came through the Dutch system, where he established himself at FC Volendam after being converted from a wide forward into a full-back early in his career. After making 97 appearances for Volendam, Murkin moved to Schalke in 2023, featuring 57 times in Germany before his switch to Utrecht.
This season, he has appeared in nine of Utrecht’s 20 Eredivisie matches, starting four of them. However, he has been a regular in European competition, making 12 appearances in the Europa League, suggesting he is not completely out of favour despite not being a guaranteed starter domestically.
While it remains unclear whether Derby’s move would be a loan or a permanent deal, Murkin’s emergence as the Rams’ primary left-back target appears to have knock-on effects elsewhere.
Derby had previously been linked with USA international George Bello, with reports suggesting a deal could have cost around £1.5m. However, with Murkin now the clear focus late in the window, any serious move for Bello looks increasingly unlikely.
Murkin’s attacking instincts make him an intriguing addition for Derby. A Bundesliga report highlighted his pace, direct running, and ability to carry the ball forward from deep qualities that stem from his early career as a wide forward.
At Volendam, he was even compared to Liverpool’s Jeremie Frimpong during the latter’s spell at Bayer Leverkusen, underlining his potential as an energetic, forward-thinking full-back.
From Derby’s perspective, Murkin’s arrival would introduce genuine competition at left-back, something Craig Forsyth has struggled to provide consistently.
Callum Elder has been one of the side’s more consistent performers this season, registering four assists and a goal, but the Australian has shouldered a heavy workload in the absence of another natural option.
With Murkin pushing for a starting place, Eustace could have a welcome selection headache the kind that can drive performances and prove invaluable in a potential play-off push.
