Derby County knock back approach for Veteran Attacker

Derby County have firmly rejected a late approach for experienced forward Andi Weimann on transfer deadline day, underscoring the value John Eustace places on the Austrian’s versatility and leadership.

The 34-year-old, who signed a one-year deal with the Rams over the summer, has spent the majority of his 16-year professional career in England, despite earning 26 caps for Austria since 2012.

A Career Built Across England

Born in Vienna, Weimann began his football journey at local side FC Stadlau before moving to Rapid Wien’s youth academy as a teenager. His potential was quickly recognized by Aston Villa, and at just 16 he crossed the Channel to join their academy in 2007.

He progressed through the ranks, making his Premier League debut in 2010, and enjoyed two loan spells at Watford to gain senior experience, amassing over 100 appearances for Villa before moving to Derby in 2015.

Weimann’s first spell at Pride Park lasted three years and included a loan to Wolverhampton Wanderers, but he is perhaps best remembered for his time in the Championship with Bristol City.

He later reunited with John Eustace, a former teammate at Watford, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County. Despite a long and successful career in England, he has never played professionally in Austria, though

Rapid Vienna reportedly explored a potential return for him this winter.

Experience and Leadership Key for Derby

On the pitch, Weimann’s second spell at Derby has been modest statistically, with one goal and three assists in 27 appearances, only six of which have been starts.

But his importance goes beyond numbers. Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph confirmed Derby have no plans to sell, while Sky Austria’s Eric Niederseer added that the club blocked the enquiry, leaving Rapid Vienna to pursue alternative targets.

A natural utility player in his prime, Weimann can operate as a winger on either flank, as an attacking midfielder, or even as a central striker.

While his pace has diminished with age, he is now more frequently deployed centrally, offering stability, experience, and leadership qualities that have become invaluable in the dressing room.

Eustace clearly values his personality and presence, particularly as Derby push for a Championship play-off spot.

It may only be a matter of time before Weimann returns to Austria to close out his career, but for now, Derby County are content to retain a player whose experience, versatility, and leadership make him a key part of the squad.
