EFL Veteran Announces Shock Retirement

Former Stevenage and Luton Town defender Ronnie Henry announces retirement from football after just three games into his time at King’s Langley.

According to The Sun, Henry suffered a fractured fibula during a defeat to Colney Heath on the 31st of January resulting in his decision to end his playing career at aged 42.

Henry’s career

Henry has over 400 EFL appearances with the majority of those being over two stints at Stevenage, captaining the side for the majority of his tenure, and a two years at Luton.

During his time at both clubs, Henry won two Conference Premier titles, including the 2009-10 season which placed him into the Conference Premier team of the year.

At the age of 42, Henry has now made the decision to end his playing career with King’s Langley sat 6th in the Southern Premier South table.

What does this mean for King’s Langley?

With 400+ apps in his professional career Henry brought mass amounts of experience to the club.

King’s Langley are currently sat just outside of the league’s playoff positions, looking to secure a chance at promotion and another step closer for the clubs goal to reach the coveted EFL.

With Henry now retiring, King’s Langley are left with a gap in their squad. How they will fill such an experienced player? That decision will be left up to the coaching staff.

With such an amazing and long career. It is sad to see Henry go into retirement from such a horrible injury.

Henry has now returned to Luton as a Professional Development Phase Coach, helping young players within the Luton academy system, in integrating themselves into the world of both young adult and first team football.

A sad retirement for a fantastic and experienced leader. But what does this mean for King’s Langley? Do you think they will have enough to secure promotion? And what are your thoughts on Ronnie Henry and his retirement? Let us know on social media.
