Five Things To Take From Sheffield United Vs Wrexham

Sheffield United were defeated 2-1 at Bramall Lane to Wrexham, with a goal from Sam Smith giving the visitors the win.

This game makes the Blades winless in their last 4 games in the Championship.

So what are the main talking points to take away from this fixture?

The Blades Bottle It Once Again

Sheffield United have made a habit of taking the lead in matches and letting it slip, and this game was no different.

The Blades took the lead in the 49th minute through an Andre Brooks goal, only to concede two goals later in the second half.

This is now the fifth time in 2026 that Chris Wilder’s men have bottled a lead to drop points, with recent examples including a 1-1 draw to West Bromwich Albion and a 2-1 defeat to Norwich City.

It’s safe to say that this inability to hold on to a lead is a key factor to Sheffield United now falling down to 17th in the Championship.

Play-Off Hopes Fade For United

Before this fixture, the hopeful Sheffield United fans may have believed their squad had an outside shot of reaching the play-offs.

The Blades sat in 15th place, however were only ten points off Southampton in 6th, so while promotion looked unlikely, it wasn’t impossible.

However, now United sit in 17th and are 13 points off the playoffs with only 21 points up for grabs in the last seven fixtures.

It seems almost guaranteed that Sheffield United will be spending another season in the Championship next year.

Arthur Okonkwo Stands Strong For Wrexham

A major part in Wrexham’s victory was a formidable display in net for Arthur Okonkwo.

The English goalkeeper made a total of six saves and prevented 0.84 goals according to FotMob.

This was especially helpful for Wrexham late in the game as Okonkwo’s incredible goalkeeping allowed them to mount their comeback and take home all three points.

This performance was much better than his last, where he conceded three goals to Watford on Tuesday in a 3-1 defeat.

Brooks Returning To His Best?

Despite the defeat, one shining light for the Blades was Andre Brooks, who bagged a goal amongst a terrific display.

The 22-year-old also had an 85% pass accuracy, had the third most touches for his team and created three chances.

United fans will be delighted with this as it marks a potential return to the great performances the winger showed in January and February, where he scored four goals in five games.

No Seriki, No Problems

Sheffield United came into this fixture without the possibility of playing their starting right back, Femi Seriki.

This comes as the full back received a red card in the last game against Birmingham City and his appeal to overturn the decision was rejected, allowing Ki-Jana Hoever to step up in his place.

The Dutchman looked impressive in just his third start for the Blades, with him being strong defensively and a good attacking option as well.

Chris Wilder now has a tough choice for the rest of the season when choosing his starting right back, as both Seriki and Hoever look like good options.
